Texas NRCS Offering Assistance Following Wildfires

June 30, 2011-- Landowners affected by recent wildfires in Montgomery County can apply for possible financial assistance through the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) for cross-fencing assistance and pasture deferment of all livestock grazing throughout the growing season.

EQIP is a continuous sign-up program and applications for assistance will be accepted in the Montgomery County Soil & Water Conservation District office located at 109 Commercial Circle, Suite 110, Conroe, TX 77304. Although sign-up is continuous, applications for this first ranking and funding period will be accepted in county NRCS offices through July 15. In order to apply, landowners must visit their local NRCS office to fill out an application. These applications will be ranked and those approved for funding will be offered an EQIP contract.

Montgomery County NRCS District Conservationist John Fancher said, “the NRCS in Montgomery County is prepared to assist landowners with their efforts to address soil & wind erosion that is continuing to occur due to drought and the effects from wildfires. We want to provide assistance that will help enable landowners and livestock producers to accelerate the recovery of the health and vigor of affected grazing land.”

He suggests landowners consult with their local NRCS district conservationist to develop a conservation plan, which can be an effective strategy for pasture and rangeland recovery, along with mitigating the effects of the dry conditions that Texas is experiencing.

Wildlife habitat also can be impacted by wildfires and NRCS can provide technical and financial assistance in re-establishing habitats of desired species.

For further assistance in evaluating your land and planning practices to address concerns following a wildfire, contact your local Natural Resources Conservation Service representative at the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District Office in Conroe at 936-756-4135. Other USDA Service center locations and additional USDA program information can be found on the Texas NRCS Web site at www.tx.nrcs.usda.gov.
