Luine Hancock poses at the home of Joyce and Claude Cooke with a life-sized cut-out poster of George W. Bush at a recent Lake Conroe Area Republican Women’s Association party.

Nancy Oughton and Flo Walker present a scholarship to Cory Colby. Walker’s patriotic jewelery sales helped provide the funds for the scholarship. The scholarship was named in honor of the late Dennis Hancock.

APRIL SOUND UPBEAT
Republican women care. Flo Walker, a member of the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women, undertook an ambitious project. She started selling patriotic jewelry, with all proceeds going to a scholarship fund. Flo visited the lounges in the various MISD schools, set up her table at luncheons around the county and sold the jewelry wherever Republican women met.
Her hard work paid off when she presented Cory Colby a scholarship to continue his studies at Montgomery College and Sam Houston State University. It had double meaning because it was given in the name of the late Dennis Hancock, who had been very active supporting Republican causes.
And speaking of Republican women, Joyce and Claude Cooke entertained the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women, their guests and elected officials in their home on Lake Conroe. Over 150 people gathered to celebrate the holiday season, but the party never seemed crowded because guests roamed all over the two-story home. A full-size cutout of President George W. Bush created a lot of photo ops.
Beautiful piano music came from the music room, and more than one guest looked over the grand piano to see who was providing the melodies. Surprise. The piano had been fitted with an electronic box, which made it a player piano for the evening.
Joyce had named a number of the rooms with plaques declaring the names. For example, the Southwestern bedroom carried that motif out in the furnishings. A favorite with many of the guests was the Texas room, which had a sign saying, “God Bless America, Mostly Texas.”
The Civic Association had a busy year in April Sound. They installed more playground equipment in April Park, restored the marina fishing pier and helped fund the sprinkler system for the boulevard and POA building.
They have an ambitious project for 2003. They are designing a beautiful entrance and arbor for April Sound Park. To fund most of the project, they are selling bricks for the Plaza with names engraved on them.
The Civic Association enhances the community and we all benefit. |
