APRIL SOUND UPBEAT

ASLA names Woman of the Year and President’s Service Award
Two members of the April Sound Ladies Association have added something new to their home decor. They each received a special plaque at the January luncheon. Sue Holladay was named Woman-of-the-Year and Karin Hughes received the President’s Service Award.
Sue graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in elementary education. After graduation she worked as a stewardess for Trans World Airlines based in Kansas City. She met her husband John through a mutual friend, and the two have been married for 48 years.
The honoree has long been active in Republican politics, and served as precinct chairman and delegate to the Dallas County Republican Convention while living in Dallas. The Holladays moved to April Sound permanently in 1993, and Sue worked her way up through various responsibilities in the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women’s Association and she is currently President.
She has served variously as Secretary of the ASLA, Vice President-Program and President. She served two terms as a member of the April Sound Country Club Board of Governors and was on the Member Long-Range Planning Committee.
Sue worked as managing partner of a computer scanning company and manager of a leather goods import company until her retirement in January 1997. She certainly has a busy retirement and we are richer for her leadership in the community.
Karin Hughes has a long record of service to the ASLA. She served as decorations chairman and created many witty centerpieces. For five years she was membership chairman and kept meticulous records on the computer. She was always on hand to greet visitors and make them feel welcome.
Our honoree also organized the medical equipment cooperative for ASLA that enables members to borrow needed equipment. The co-op is widely used.
Karin came to Texas in a roundabout way. She was born in Paraguay, moved to Canada with her parents, then to Santa Barbara, California, and finally to Texas. She speaks three languages--Spanish, German and English, and says English was her third language.
Karin and husband, Bob, a pilot with Continental, have been married 29 years, and have traveled extensively, including jaunts to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Africa.
Our honoree has had a variety of jobs, several related to the travel industry. She has been a travel agent, reservation agent for Texas International, and in passenger sales and service for Aeromexico. She also worked as a real estate agent, getting her license at age 19, the youngest to receive it in California.
An enthusiastic crafter, Karin organized bus trips for ASLA members to the International Quilt Show in Houston and the Nutcracker Market in alternating years. In 1997, she entered her famous jalapeno jelly in the Montgomery County Fair and came home with a first place ribbon.
Karin adds much to our community with her bubbly upbeat personality and zeal for whatever project she is working on. |
