Who We Are

April Sound UpBeat

ASCA president Jerry Hollinger congratulating Ruby Shelton , winner of Spiritual Christmas Display category.

There were alternating tears and smiles when Beth Maxwell and Doris Johnson received special awards from the April Sound Ladies Association. Neither expected the honor and to say they were surprised is an understatement.

Beth was named The-Woman-of-the-Year and received heavy applause from the luncheon group. She served as chairman of the Outreach Committee and organized 125 volunteers to take food and provide other services when members were ill or had a death in the family. Many times it was Beth herself who cooked a lovely meal and delivered it.

Her concern extended to numerous phone calls to see what was needed and she volunteered to help people get to medical appointments or to pick up needed supplies.

In the community Beth put a lot of love into her job working with at-risk students to prepare them for the TAAS test. She is also active in CASA helping with fund raising, in the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women and April Sound Church.

Doris received the President’s Service Award. In ASLA she has served as corresponding secretary and as Outreach co-chairman. She tutors students in the Montgomery schools, is involved in CASA, the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society, Lake Conroe Area Republican Women and April Sound Church.

It was Doris’ loving heart which made her a popular choice for the award. She is quick to provide food or moral support when someone in April Sound is going through a rough patch. Her kindness makes difficulties a little easier.

Christmas lights were spectacular in April Sound this year. Judges had a hard time selecting winners but finally named three who won a $100 gift certificate from Paradise Gardens. Donna and Herb Johnson, 183 April Wind East won in the traditional category, Ruby Shelton took honors in the spiritual category for her display at 96 Dawns Edge, and Barbara and Johnny Johnson, 194 April Waters West, won in the festival of lights category.

All of the home owners who decorated were winners because they made our community so attractive over the holidays.

When you see people in April Sound carrying around stuffed bears there is a reason. Marian Hooper is making a collection to divide between three agencies in Conroe which serve children in crisis situations. Bears have stopped being only toys, they are a source of comfort to children who need something to hug.
