APRIL SOUND UPBEAT

April Sound Ladies Association

By Ann Marie Ricci

Janice Murphy, April Sound Chief Security accepting the Certificate of Appreciation from Ladies Association President, Flo Walker, on behalf of all the April Sound Security Force.

As has become tradition with the April Sound Ladies Association, the October luncheon and Trades Day was held at the Club on Wednesday, October 27th. There were over 23 vendors this year who set up their booths in the Driftwood Room, and the sale was open from 10:00 until 11:30 AM for the ladies and guests who were attending the luncheon.
Then, after the luncheon, the sale resumed for the public and anyone who could not come earlier. There was a great variety of items for sale including wreaths, flower arrangements and seasonal decorations, jewelry, purses and bags, hand decorated blouses, shirts, and vests, many homemade food items, baby blankets, stationery, and even beautifully painted rocks. All attending thought the day was a great success, thanks to the hard work and organization of co-chairs Peggy Simme and Shirley Hunt.
During the business meeting at the luncheon, President Flo Walker presented a Certificate of Appreciation and a dozen beautiful roses to Janice Murphy, who has served as our April Sound Chief of Security since 1991. Janice has worked at April Sound since October of 1985, starting at the bottom and working her way to the chief's position. In July she was married to Lieutenant Terry Murphy of the Lake Conroe Fire Department, and she has a twenty year old son.
There are 15 Security Officers at April Sound. Seven of them have been in their positions for ten years or longer, and only four have been working with the security force for less than two years. That says a lot about their interest and dedication to keeping April Sound a safe, secure, and happy place for the residents. Janice says she loves her job, feels very close with the residents, has grown with our community, and is proud to be Chief of Security at April Sound.
On Friday of that same week, Marvelle Finch hosted a luncheon for new members and members of the Association board at her home. 29 ladies have joined the Association after the first membership drive in January of 2004. Twelve new members and twenty-one board members attended the Halloween costume luncheon for which board members provided the homemade salads, casseroles, and desserts.
After lunch, Karen Schanberger, Membership Chairman, announced the prizes for best costumes. Honorable mention went to Laney Whiteman and Anita Harris who were dressed as Dutch girls, having purchased their bonnets and aprons on a recent trip to Holland. Receiving third prize for the best period costume was Lorena Stanislaw who was a flapper, second prize for the funniest went to Ann Marie Ricci who came as a Happy Bug, and first prize for the most scary and authentic Halloween was awarded to new member Carey Edwards. Following the costume prizes, Karen introduced all the new members, and they each told about themselves, then all board members did the same. All attending agreed the luncheon was wonderful and were most appreciative to Marvelle Finch for her hospitality.
