APRIL SOUND UPBEAT
The October meeting of the April Sound Ladies Association was a craft and gift show and it was a real winner. Twenty six members had booths in the Lodge Room of the April Sound Country Club, and it was loaded with handmade item by members. Ronnie Butler had made breads which disappeared quickly. Birdie Gilbert’s booth was loaded with baskets of all sizes, and they were so popular she went home empty handed. The Ladies Golf Association was selling their cookbooks. They started with a big stack and only left with two. Luise Long had a booth filled with crocheted stoles and fabric stuffed elephants, each more colorful than the one next to it. Carlene Cook of the popular coffee shop The Daily Grind, located across from April Sound, made up a number of gift packages in time for holiday giving. She shared space with Susan Warzetha who was selling soaps. Pat Ashford was selling Creative Memory photo albums, and she teaches classes to show people what to do with them. There’s nothing like getting the photos out from under the bed and in a properly labeled format. Mary Devine was selling her colorful watercolor paintings. Both Anne Hart and Wanda Brooks had booths stacked high with fabric art and it was wonderful. Luine Hancock is president of the Lake Conroe Area Republican Women, which now has a membership hovering just under 400. She presided over a recent dinner meeting, during which the feature speaker was Gregg Abbott, a former justice of the Texas Supreme Court. He is now a candidate for Texas Attorney General. Sue Holladay and Flo Walker are handling the membership desk, and they are busy ladies with LCARW growing so rapidly. Beverly Cox heads up Long Range Planning for the April Sound Property Owners Association, and she organized a breakfast meeting with County Judge "Barb" Sadler as speaker. Judge Sadler spoke about matters affecting the lake area, including the proposed Groundwater Conservation District and the bond issue for road construction. There was a great deal of interest in the Fish Creek Thoroughfare, which would provide an alternative north-south route between FM 2854 and FM 1488, connecting with FM 2978. It’s not always easy being new in a community, so the Ladies Association have given a new member party for the past five years or so to help with the transition of feeling at home in a new community. This year Marvelle Finch hosted it in Halloween and the costumes were quite colorful. About 30 new members attended to mingle with ASLA board members and get acquainted. Some ideas are worth repeating and the new member party is a winner which is becoming a tradition. |
