Who We Are

April Sound UpBeat
by JJB

Morris Eickenhorst kept the room rocking with his down home humor.

It was a 10-year anniversary for the Musical Sounders of April Sound when they performed at the recent April Sound Ladies Association luncheon. They were formed in 1991 and are still performing for groups and nursing homes around the county. Ruth Cant, director and founder, said they have made 85 appearances to date. Original members still singing with them are Betty Bashen, Norma McClure and Pat Whitman.

Their program was a retro look of songs from their 10-year history including "Bye Bye Blues" which they always sing at nursing homes, "Climb Every Mountain" and "Over The Rainbow".

Marilyn Sponheimer, Norma McClure and Pat Whitman dance to "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy".

After a lively program of music, Morris Eickenhorst, humorist, took the microphone and kept us laughing for 30 minutes with his clean humor. He brings the house down wherever he performs. Morris is in demand around the country as a speaker and we were honored to have him with us. His talk ended with a brief devotional-type minute which brought the program to a nice close.

Flo Winston leads the Music Sounders in the Macarena and Morris Eickenhorst joins in.

The Musical Sounders are Betty Bashen, Ruth Cameron, Ann Hastings, Luise Long, Norma McClure, Linda Sanders, Phyllis McNamara, Marilyn Sponheimer, Carol Vasconcellos, Ann Watt, Pat Whitman, Betty Willis, Flo Winston and Carolyn Wohlt. Ruth Cant is the leader and pianist.

The April program will be a blockbuster too. Member Jackie Reece owns the Old School House in Montgomery and she will bring us fashions from there which some of our ladies will model. In a tribute to spring, April is hat month so we will all wear hats ranging from antique store finds to ones we make ourselves.

When a non-profit group needs support you can usually find some of our residents there to lend a hand. On Sunday night five church choirs presented a Gospel Mass at the First United Methodist Church on Hwy 105 and many of our residents were singing in the choir or in the audience. The concert was in support of the newly organized Interfaith Hospital Network which will provide food and lodging for homeless families when needed. To date 9 churches are supporting the effort and will be a host church on a rotating basis.
