April Sound’s Neighbor’s Day Out
Staff Report

Neighbor’s Day Out and Park Dedication was successfully held on Sunday, April 8 at the new Park and P.O.A. Community Center. It was a beautiful sunny day with an attendance of about 250 people.

Jerry Hollinger, C.A. Parliamentarian, opened the ceremony with the unveiling of the splendid April Park Sign, which reads: BUILT JOINTLY BY APRIL SOUND CIVIC ASSOC., COUNTRY CLUB & POA/DEDICATED APRIL 2001.

Dowen Johnson of the April Sound Church invoked the divine goodwill and protection upon the Park.

Howard Slater, P.O.A. President and Paul Belcher, ASCC General Manager, expressed that due to the cooperation of the POA, CC and CA wonderful things can be accomplished and this Park is an example.

Flo Winston, Chairperson for the Days event, thanked her enduring committee: George Bashen, Marilyn Burns, Lorena Stanislaw, Yvette Tomeo, Russ Jordan, Penny Peluso, Clyde Williams, Diana Wilson and Betty Bashen. She asked people to give a personal thank you to the volunteers who were wearing blue name tags. She also acknowledged, Lake Conroe Fire Department, Kay McAlpin, Ed Hurdle, Dowin Johnson, Paul Belcher, Jerry Hollinger, Howard Slater and Janice Brandt. A special thanks to son Jim and Larry who provided the PA system.

Flo then announced the door prizes for the day, which were obtained by George Bashen and Marilyn Burns. These gifts were donated by Roz Dauzat-Edward Jones, Dinners Brunch and Lunches at the grille-ASCC; Subway; Golden Corrale; Luby’s; Mariel’s; Marvel Finch; Anne Hart; Pat Anderson, Steal and Ale; Bennigans; Luther’s; Joyce Beckworth, Kay Mathias-Garden World; Vernon’s; Outback; Honey B Ham, Jack in the Box and McDonalds.

Then Flo stated everyone should have a balloon in hand for the ceremony. The American Legion Color Guard of Willis raised the American Flag to the Star Spangled Banner and all repeated the Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by the Caney Creek H.S. ROTC Color Guard presentation. Concluding with the command "Release the balloons" was an awesome sight of various colors soaring on high for a memorable Day Out and Dedication.

Desserts GALORE decorated the Community Center tables brought by the residents. Beverages were provided by the ASCC.

The fun and games continued i.e. fun run, sack races, water balloon toss, volley ball, basketball free throw, face painting snow cones, horse shoes and baseball. Pendant awards were given.

A good time was had by all.
