The story of Unique Boutique is an interesting one, and Nina Gentry, the owner, shared it with the April Sound Ladies Association at its March luncheon. After working as an interior decorator for 20 years, Nina decided she wanted a new career. "I had always enjoyed clothes and fashion," she said, "so I started going to the market in Dallas, and brought back clothes for a few friends." That start grew and grew. Now she sells clothes from her home by appointment, takes them into schools to show teachers and the school staff, does fashion shows and even has a personal shopping service in customers' homes. All of this takes her to market six times a year. Betty Bashen, Barbara Durbin, Dee Huggins, Phyllis McNamara, Mable Edith Oliver and Anne Watt showed spring fashions from Unique Boutique, dancing on the runway as they showed the new styles to tunes from the 40s. While the models were changing, Nina showed all the wardrobe changes that could be made, starting with a simple sheath. April Sound Church had an Easter sunrise service on the edge of the lake. Despite a chill in the air and a light drizzle, several hundred residents came to worship and celebrate the Easter Message. Special music included "Amazing Love," sung by Jan, Josh and Jody Smith, and "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" sung by Twila Johnson. Pastor Cary Smith's sermon was based on the Easter story from the Gospel of John and I Corinthians. At the conclusion of the service everyone went to the Lakeside Room for a breakfast buffet of scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, bacon and fried potatoes, with lots of hot coffee and orange juice, prepared by the Club staff. They did double duty on Easter, because they then moved to the Club dining room to serve the Easter buffet. For those who didn't want to brave the elements that early in the morning, the church had a second service at 10 a.m. Following that there was an Easter Egg Hunt for children ages 2 - 7, which brought many smiles and squeals of delight. On a happier note, the Conroe Art League established a memorial fund in the name of Dan Cearley, who was one of its members and an April Sound resident. The scholarship named for Dan was awarded to Erin Smith of The Woodlands High School this year. Erin has been in advanced placement art classes, and has been accepted at several visual arts schools for her college career. |
