APRIL SOUND UPBEAT
By JJB

Left to Right; Phyllis McNamara and Marvelle Finch thank Rob Landes.

Dee Huggins, Priscilla Milholland and Shirley Hunt wear prize winning hats

Rob Landes really livens up a room. He entertained the April Sound Ladies Association at their April luncheon and brought a lot of smiles and memories. His program included songs from Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, interspersed with comments about their lives and their songs. It's always a treat to have Rob; he is the consummate performer.

He's a bit of a Renaissance man. He heads the Rob Landes trio, which plays in dinner clubs and for parties around Houston. At one time he traveled with Marilyn Maye on her concert tours as her accompanist. He is a church organist and has composed much sacred music. He is also a recording artist and has several CDs to his credit.

The April luncheon was hat day and members wore many lovely styles. Dee Huggins won for the most creative hat. Hers had a "Sold" sign on it, rather fitting since she is a realtor. Priscilla Milholland won for the most original and Shirley Hunt took a prize for the funniest.

April Sound Tennis Association is having the Seventh Annual Nathan Geick Memorial Tournament on May 18. It is held in memory of Nathan Geick, an April Sound member who was not only an avid tennis player, but also a big supporter of junior tennis. To date over $30,000 in scholarships have been given to local students.

The doubles tournament is open to all players in levels 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5. Please contact Adrian Bey at the April Sound Tennis Center for more details.

Friday night golf started in April and has an enthusiastic turnout. Women's WGA tournament is scheduled for May 16 and Men's MGA tournament is May 18 and 19.

The Senior Golf Championship was April 13-14. In the group of 50-59 year olds, Tom Threadgill came in first, Gary Mask in second, Larry Harris in Third and Joe McNeal in fourth.

In the 60-69 category Chuck Day came in first, James Powell took second, Neal Adams came in third and Bob Southard placed fourth.

Winner in 70-and-up were Cal Phelps first, Glenn Finkbiner, second, and Lou Lorch, third.
