Helping Hands is one of the outreach programs of April Sound Church. On Tuesdays and Thursdays volunteers on the Helping Hands committee go to Montgomery County Emergency Assistance in Conroe. Some of the people who come into the agency for help are then referred to the April Sound workers. The church helps with everything from assistance with utility bills to prescriptions. At Thanksgiving dozens of families receive vouchers for food purchases. And at Christmas again, food vouchers are provided, plus toys for children in the family. A large part of the funding comes from the annual Helping Hands golf outing, and the one last Sunday was a real winner. One hundred forty four golfers hit the links, and they were joined by others for the awards dinner, all at April Sound Country Club. The top winners were the team of Fred Schurr, Dave Marts, R. Odom and A. Chiappone. Second place was Gene Finch, Dee Finch, S. Finch and K. Harper. The third place award went to Bob and Marilyn Southard and Doc and Carol Fennessy. It wouldn’t be a fundraiser without auctions. There was spirited bidding in the live auction for a shadow box creation by Rod Brumfield. It combined a miniature racing car with a picture of Dale Jarrett. Fittingly, Jarrett just won the Pocono 500 NASCAR race. Another unique item that had the bidders raising their hands was a hand carved wooden rocking motorcycle crafted by prison inmates. Judy and Jim Faulkner have a prison ministry and they donated this one-of-a-kind item. The silent auction saw a lot of activity, too. Laura Turner of Crossroads Antiques donated an antique punch bowl with 24 cups and bidding was spirited. Ann Richmond took it home with a smile on her face. The real winners are the people Helping Hands will be able to assist. When the generous contributions from hole sponsors, auction items and donations from church members were totaled, the amount passed $24,000 and is moving upward to $25,000, all of which will be used to benefit those who do indeed need a helping hand. Don Gould chaired the event, and wife Mary did a lot of work to make it a success. Shannon Roberts, April Sound’s computer guru, has moved his office across the highway to 15865 Texas 105 West, Suite 2. He’s located next to Sparkling Donuts and Signature Cleaners. Shannon often tackles the hard problems we run into on computers and brings us back to operating condition. He loves to build the new ones, too, and has built one for many of us, adding all the bells and whistles to keep us current. Singles in April Sound have been searching for things to do and places to go for "singles to mingle." A committee has been formed with Flo Winston, Russ Johnson, Geri Barone and Dee Huggins, with the support of Club Manager Paul Belcher, and things really began happening. The first meeting was held in the game room of April Sound Country Club with 24 attending, and now there are 58 members in the Super Singles Group. Successful gatherings consisted of line dance and swing lessons, and a night of dinner followed by bingo. Future plans for the bi-monthly "SS" group are game tournaments, Bunko, wine tasting, a poolside party and big band dance. Other interests are in the planning stages. Any single wishing information is invited to call Flo Winston at 936-447-3122. Potluck dinners are traditional with churches and April Sound church just held one Sunday night. There were dozens of interesting dishes to choose from, so apparently cooking hasn’t gone out of style. The Bentwater Ladies Barbershop singers came to entertain us with a number of patriotic songs and they received a lot of applause. |
