Musical Sounders of April Sound

L-R: Pat Whitman, Marilyn Sponheimer and Norma McClure.

Musical Sounders of April Sound was organized in May 1991 as one of the special interest groups which are part of the April Sound Ladies Association. Ruth Cant was the founder and still serves as director today. Three original members still sing with the choral group--Pat Whitman, Norma McClure and Betty Bashen. Anne Wyatt joined a short time later.

The Sounders marked their 100th concert singing for the May luncheon of ASLA, and they brought down the house. Three members study dance with Georgann Mills at her studio in Conroe, and they did a fast change in costumes to tap to "Rock Around the Clock". Norma McClure makes the costumes for the trio, which includes Pat Whitman and Marilyn Sponheimer.

Since their inceptions the group has presented 53 programs to nursing homes and assisted living facilities, 19 to social groups, 11 church groups and 13 to service organizations. For this concert they wore handsome sequined vests decorated in musical motif.

Their programs are lively and usually get the audiences tapping their feet to well-known favorites. For ASLA they sang "I Like Mountain Music" and used a variety of props including a washboard. Betty Willis joined Ruth Cant on the bench for "I Love a Piano". The ladies at the luncheon really got in the spirit for "Texas Our Texas" and "Deep in the Heart of Texas".

Current members of the Sounders are Betty Bashen, Ruth Cameron, Jean Chancy, Ann Hastings, Shirley Hunt, Luise Long, Norma McClure, Phyllis McNamara, Linda Sanders, Marilyn Sponheimer, Carol Vasconcellos, Anne Watt, Pat Whitman, Betty Willis, Flo Winston and Carolyn Wohlt.

Each year April Sound Church has a reception for seniors in the church for graduates of area high schools. This year the honorees were Blake Allen, Sarah Christy, Parker Dudley, Karen Ehlers, Alexis Scobie, Emily Southard and Lindsey Wright. Each graduate had a table for a display, which included mementos of their school years, and they were fun to see.

Blake was a member of the National Honor Society and the Fellowship for Christian Athletes. He was recognized by Who’s Who Among American High School Students for three consecutive years. Blake plans to attend the University of Texas-Austin, where he will major in computer science engineering.

Sarah has been an active member of April Sound Church for ten years and played a saxophone in the Montgomery High School Band. One of her consuming interest is horsemanship. She works at Madoc Farms in Montgomery, where she rides and trains horses. She has competed since the age of seven in Hunter and English Pleasure competitions, although her main interest now is Dressage. Sarah had a table full of awards and they keep rolling in.

Parker is an athlete. He played football for four years and lettered his junior and senior years. He was chosen captain his senior year, and name offensive player of the week. Parker is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and plans to attend A&M University-Galveston, majoring in mechanical engineering.

Karen is heading to Northwood University on a golf scholarship, and her honors in golf are many and prestigious. She is a member of the National Honor Society and National Honor Roll. She is listed in Who’s Who. When not practicing golf, she found time to participate in the DECA Club and Key Club.

Alexis graduated tenth in her class at MHS and was named among the top 100 musicians from local 4A schools. She played in both concert and marching bands. She was an active member of the National Charity League, serving as President her senior year. She received a number of academic awards. Alexis will attend Southwestern University in Georgetown, TX., where she will pursue a degree in Psychology and Communications.

Emily had a unique high school experience. She took her freshman year at John Cooper School in The Woodlands and entered Montgomery College under the "exceptional admissions" program at the age of 15. She graduated with 60 hours of college credit in addition to studies taken independently. She is considering several colleges at the moment.

Lindsey had a busy high school career. Among her activities were Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, Young Life, Varsity Girls Golf, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), Art Club, and National Honor Society. She was editor of the yearbook and served on the First Bank of Conroe Junior Board of Directors.

Her awards were numerous. Among them were Desktop Publishing Student of the Year, Yearbook Student of the Year, Marketing Dynamics Student of the Year, and American Character and Citizenship Award. She will be attending Texas A&M this fall.
