Our April Sound Civic Association is always looking for ways to improve April Sound and make it a better place for us to live. Current officers are: President: Gary Cluck, Vice-President: Vicky Burg, Secretary: Pat Whitman, Treasurer: Jim Riley, Director of Membership and Communications: Ed Henderson, Director of Social, Activities: Kim Ward, Director of Parks and Recreation: Diana Wilson Among their many accomplishments this year are installing a fishing pier at the marina, so kids and adults alike can pull in some big fish. They have assisted with upgrading the sprinkler system on the boulevard. Toddler’s playground equipment for April Park was purchased and installed by the Civic Association. The list goes on. They did needed repair work at Carraway Park and planted additional plants and flowers at April Park. They are responsible for installing lights at the pavilion and providing another barbecue grill, sand for the volleyball court and furnishing land area material for the playground. The highly coveted Yard-of-the-Month award is given by the Civic Association. When there is a holiday, they are on hand to make it special, like the annual Easter Egg Hunt and 4th of July parade. They have even compiled an April Sound telephone directory. Improvements done by the Civic Association are funded by dues of members and a golf tournament. We have a current membership of over 400 residents. So far this year they have spent $15,000 to make April Sound a great place to live. The Civic Association Board meets the second Tuesday of the month, and interested residents are invited to attend the meeting. It’s amazing how a hard working group like the association can add to the quality of life in our community. A group from April Sound made the trek to Montgomery College to see the dinner theater production of "They’re Playing Our Song," featuring Jami Hughes of April Sound. She is Director of the Theater Department there, and takes a part in the dinner theater each summer. The play was taken from the love story of Carol Bayer Sager and Marvin Hamlisch, who wrote the lyrics and music, and had some very witty lines. For reasons unknown to the audience, the air conditioning system went absolutely berserk and the room went from pleasantly cool to North Pole freezing. We were all hugging ourselves to try to keep warm. Finally the helpful wait staff asked if we wanted tablecloths to wrap up in and we took them gladly. Soon we were all wearing them as outsized stoles. One member of our party went to the restroom, and when she returned she said it looked like the audience was all in dust covers. Another quipped that all we needed was white hoods to look like a meeting of the Ku Klux Klan. Happily our bizarre apparel didn’t detract from a great evening of theater. |
