APRIL SOUND UPBEAT
By JJB

The April Sound Line Dancers.

L-R Doris Johnson and Judy Deal received a rose from Marvelle Finch at an April Sound Ladies Association luncheon commending them for their work as Outreach Co-Chairmen.

The April Sound Ladies Association Line Dancers showed all of their best moves for the August luncheon. Dancing were Pat Leno, Doris Johnson, Ellie Grant, Eleanor Osmond, Glenna Batterton, Dorothy Horton, Marilyn Mahoney and Flo Winston. They treated the luncheon group to the South Side Shuffle, Cha Cha, Fly Like A Bird and Blue Roses.
Brenda Bevan from Montgomery Junior High School spoke about a unique history scavenger hunt, during which students bring history alive by finding historic buildings and sites in Montgomery.
Rounding out the lively program was Mike Kelly from Texas Opry in Magnolia, who did three costume changes. He first came on with his act Mike and the Monkey. The monkey was a clever hand puppet. Then he returned as a cowboy poet and entertained with “All the Girls I Love.” In his final act he wore a tux and did an impersonation of Julio Iglesias, which brought the house down.
We have many hundreds of marvelous people in our community, but every once in a while a real villain shows up. Mike packed his truck with his costumes to entertain during a benefit at the Lone Star Convention Center, and a thief broke into his vehicle and stole them all before the show. He is gradually replacing the stolen items, but it was a hardship that didn’t need to happen. We nominate the thief as “Grinch of the Month.”
Doris Johnson and Judy Deal are co-chairmen of our Care and Concern committee. When someone needs help, that duo steps in to arrange for food. They received roses and words of thanks from President Marvelle Finch during the August meeting. We all echo her thanks.
Jane Leonard is one of April Sound’s success stories. She is a therapist with two degrees after her name, and has held top-level positions in her field. Now she has started her own company Kid Potential Learning Enhancement Center on West Davis in Conroe.
As she worked with children who had physical disabilities, she learned she could do much to give them mobility, but there was another need. Many of them also had learning difficulties. She literally searched the United Sates to find programs to help with learning gaps, and found two programs that helped kids make great strides in reading and mathematics.
Jane opened up a new office in a 10-room suite, and the success stories are beginning to come out of Kid Potential. Interestingly, she is also working with adults who can’t read, but they are learning for the first time.
We are all a little down as we contemplate the far reaching effects of 9/11, but it’s nice to get upbeat news like the successes kids and adults are achieving at Kid Potential. This success is even more amazing because Jane was born with cerebral palsy and has achieved on a high level despite having to work with a disability herself. Much of her empathy with disabled children comes from hard won experience. Way to go, Jane!
