APRIL SOUND UPBEAT
By JJB

Twila Johnson received a basket of goodies from her Bible class.

Shalir Vinsonhaler

The April Sound Country Club brought the big band sound to the Lakeside Room for a popular dance. Doug Gillory headed up the band. He played the alto, tenor and baritone saxophones, and was joined by other musicians on the keyboard, bass guitar and drums. His wife Patsy Gillory, a teacher at McCullough High School, joined him for vocals on some of the numbers like Mack the Knife.
Gillory has an interesting background. As a young man he played in Las Vegas with some of the biggest names in music. At 26 he decided he wanted a more traditional life and returned to Texas to get a degree in electronics, which has led him to become a computer programmer for a living. But his love of music continues, and he plays and writes music and records.
The dance floor was crowded all evening. One of the dancers with all the moves was Angela Graves, who sold her dance studio but still teaches privately for the sheer love of dancing.
Friday nights bring a few of the old songs, too, when Shalir Vinsonhaler is at the piano in the Helmsman’s Lounge. He attracts a happy hour group who come to hear him every week. Often they bring music they would like to hear, and several are even brave enough to sing with his piano accompaniment.
September is the 30th anniversary of April Sound Country Club, and the club is providing two events when the members can celebrate. The Lake Conroe Splash is dedicating part of the September issue to the history of the club.
Daughters of the Republic of Texas is looking for women to join them in their objective of perpetuating the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas. One of their big projects is to maintain The Alamo in San Antonio.
The organization has an office and museum in Austin at 510 East Anderson Lane. Anyone who is interested in joining may call Joy Caviness at 588-3624. She will explain requirements for membership and explain the work they do in preserving Texas history.
April Sound Church has introduced something new for the fall season. A special age appropriate worship service and formal Sunday School is available for children, starting at age three years old. Children ages three to third grade will be part of Alpha Clubs, which are divided into three age groups. The 4th, 5th and 6th graders will be known as the 456 Club. All children meet from 9 - 11 a.m. each Sunday.
In addition these groups meet Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m. Activities on Wednesdays include group projects, interactive lessons focusing on missions and praise music. Supper is available for $3 and a club tee shirt is available for $10.
For information about the special programs for children, call April Sound Church at 936-588-2832.
Both April Sound Church and the new Lake Community Church are planning special commemorative services for September 11, a time when we will all stop and meditate. April Sound Church will have special services at 5:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. The Lake Community Church is holding a service in the Lakeside Room at 7 p.m., featuring vocalist Betty Chandler.
