Lucile Spencer Honored

Lucile Spencer was the guest of honor at the Cape Conroe Ladies' Society meeting last week. Lucile, a charter member and cofounder of the Ladies Society, told members about how the Ladies Society was formed. She related several humorous stories about past trips and functions including potluck suppers, bazaars and even the story of when she became locked in the bathroom at the Antique Rose Garden.
Lucile, Catherine Woodruff, Olivia Roberts and Dorothy Cullison described Cape Conroe when they moved here in the 1970's and early 1980's before the lake was here or the streets were paved.
Accompanying Lucile to Cape Conroe were her daughter, Lucretia Shaver, and granddaughter, Leigh Shaver. Guests attending the Ladies Society meeting were Mary Ann Boekewick and Maxie Land.
Happy 91st Birthday wishes to Lucile Spencer. Olivia Roberts hosted a birthday dinner for Lucile at the Heritage House last week. Attending the dinner were Lucretia Shaver, Leigh Shaver, Dorothy Cullison, Maxie Land, Catherine Woodruff, Betty Laird, Helen White and Lorraine Wyatt.
Sarah Ruthstrom, granddaughter of Lester and Dorotha Ruthstrom, just returned from a seven day trip to New York City and Washington D.C. with her Science and Health Profession Group from Conroe High School. She enjoyed the many experiences of her wellplanned trip: the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Broadway, the numerous museums, but Sarah said the experience that was most memorable was the one that had not been planned. Her chance of a lifetime to experience history came when the students joined with thousands of other Americans along Constitution Avenue to witness the procession bearing former President Ronald Reagan's body to the U.S. Capitol. Sarah said the experience was absolutely breathtaking. She and two other students along with a chaperone stood in line until 2:00 a.m. to pass by the casket in the Capitol rotunda. Sarah said that though her feet and legs felt numb from the long wait, it was a privilege to be there. Sarah's parents and grandparents are proud that she chose to participate in such a unique historical event. Now, she is looking forward to returning to her summer job at the Conroe YMCA where she is a lifeguard and swim instructor.
Paul and Rachael Threadgill recently returned from Winter Park, Colorado where they attended the wedding of Rachael's sister, Sarah Edwards, to Brett Parks. The ceremony took place outdoors on a mountain overlooking the Continental Divide. Rachael was the Matron of Honor with her daughters, Shelby, 5, and Jamie, 3, as flower girls. Joining family and friends at the wedding and reception were Rachael and Sarah's parents, Jimmy and Debbie Edwards.
Before attending the wedding, forty friends and family members spent the day white water rafting. Three rafts with guides took the group for a great ride in the icy water.
Our grandson, Matthew Nixon, had a great time last week attending the Golf Camp at Walden Golf Club. At eightyearsold he is a serious golfer! Thanks to Ron Herridge and his staff for their hard work and patience.
Until next week take care, be safe and give someone a hug! Have a Great Week!
