Who We Are

August 25, 2004

Bobville Express, Dobbin, Texas
by Ann Smith

"Ms. Bessie" was well known in Montgomery

Bessie Owens passed away late last week. "Ms. Bessie" was well known in Montgomery as she had been a teacher and librarian for many years. My oldest son, Jim, was one of her pupils and she never forgot to ask me about him as she said some students are just extra special and he was one of them to her. Of course, being his mother that made me feel proud.
"Ms. Bessie" was our local historian and was very involved in the Historical Society. Whenever someone needed some history facts about Montgomery and surrounding areas, she would be the first one to come to mind to ask the questions, knowing she would have the answers. As "Ms Bessie" grew older her brother, James Price. tended to be the one to ask about our local history. I guess it's a family thing.
I would like to extend my sympathy to all her family at this time. I know they must all be very proud of all her accomplishments in her lifetime.
Our Aunt Margaret Mary Stockert was surprised Saturday, August 21, 2004 by her 8 children (Doris, Shirley, Gilbert, Maddie, Gloria, Glenda, Clifford and Kay Kay) Her children, their spouses, her grandchildren and their spouses and her great grandchildren all wore TShirts with Aunt Margaret's picture on it and their number in line, such as Child # 1, Grandchild # 1 and Great Grandchild # 1 and so on. I was so impressed with that and all the work that had to go into that project. They also presented her with an album that was made by each grandchild filling in a page however they wanted. That also was a big project for someone to tackle and complete. We were served a really delicious BBQ meal and they had two really big sheet cakes decorated on the gambling theme as she loves to go to the boat ( just like my mother in law use to). The tables were decorated with decks of cards with the cards laid out with winning hands and colored coins laying around with circle pictures of Aunt Margaret.
A lot of work was put into this surprise party for a very special lady. James and I were so happy to join in the celebration for her. Our daughter, Jacque, also attended with us. James' sister Pinkie attended with cousins Bill Molitor from Houston. Florence Bay from Anderson, Florence Cox from Huntsville, Texas,.
Hope Mariarty and her son from Anderson, Charles and Carol Borski and children
from Anderson. Also attending from Dobbin were Pauline Mock and her daughter, Phillis. There was quite a crowd there including a lot of Diehl's, Aunt Margaret was a Diehl before she married Uncle Bennie Stockert. The Hoffart's were represented as they married into the Diehl family. I could go on and on, but since I didn't get all the names I'd only embarrass myself. Let me just say, it was a wonderful get together for a wonderful lady and a good time was had by all.
Tuesday, August 24th, was the birthday of James' sister, Pinkie, and we hope
she enjoyed her special day. Pinkie was a very devoted daughter to her mother and father through their last years. They leaned on her and she did a very good job of seeing them spend their last years as comfortably as they could in their own home. She can be very proud of that as it was not an easy job to have. We wish her a happy year ahead.
My son, Jim, from Tarkington, Texas had a High School friend visit him Saturday
evening from Austin, Texas. Alan Sanders and his dad paid him a visit and Jacque and I went over that evening to view Alan's triplets on Jim's computer. Alan said they decided to buy a web page because they were forever sending pictures over their computer. This way anyone can just pull it up to see the latest pictures. They have 2 girls and 1 boy, all very good looking, not identical and almost 3 years old. Jim's wife Jeanie also had her parents over and we had cake to celebrate her dad's birthday, which was the same day as my mother's, August 14th. It turns out Alan's dad also shares that birthday. It is a small world after all.
Speaking of small worlds, here's another story. At Church on Sunday we had a new music leader who sang beautifully. After Mass I saw her in the hall and told her she did a beautiful job. She then told me she went to IWA with me. I was shocked that she would remember me. It really is a small world for us to meet again after all these years. It made me feel so good.
After coming home from Church on Sunday, James, Jacque, Jerome and I spent the
afternoon planting crepe myrtle trees we had found on sale on the way to the
surprise party Saturday. We stopped on the way home and loaded up 6 big ones
into our Durango. We found them on 249 on sale for $7.00 each. We think we got
the bargain of the year. They are real sturdy looking and are all planted thanks to Jerome digging the holes. James and Jacque staked them out and I helped by picking up the excess blackland and driving the truck back and forth.
I keep waiting for someone to tell me some of their doings. You must be getting
bored with my doings by now. My boxes in Hoffart's and Mock's were both empty
this week. Any birthdays, anniversary, parties or news from school? I would like to hear about other families. Hope to see you right her next week with more news.
