St. Mary's Bazaar was a grand success. I was told there was a big crowd and a pleasant day as far as weather goes. The new Kolache Booth did real well as all of that was donated, no expenses to come out. They have a few details to iron out before next year, but I'm sure it will be even better then. My family got involved in selling BBQ sandwiches at the dance that was held from 48 p.m.
Jacque, Jerome & Amy, their children Sarah, Ty and Clayton, my sister, Therese from Houston and her husband Tom and daughter Tina, and my daughter, Janette and son Michael from New Caney all pitched in and stayed busy feeding the hungry dancers. I sent 2 dozen Kolaches for them and they were gone in no time.
Next year we will make a lot more desserts.
Grandparents Day at Montgomery Schools was another great success, as usual.
I enjoyed my visit with Ty Isaac Smith at his school where they furnished us with picnic lunches. We found a nice shaded place to eat. There was a nice cool breeze blowing. Ty and I had a delightful conversation as we ate lunch, usually there are so many people around us we don't get a whole conversation in together.
Sarah Kate's other grandparents, Jerry and Sarah Holland drove in from Conroe and had ice cream with her during her afternoon get together.
My grandchildren in Tarkington also invited me, but, alas, I had to go to work that afternoon so there just wasn't enough time to fit in all my grandparenting duties. Next year I will focus on them. Thank goodness they also have another grandmother living right there who never misses any of her grandparents days and she has more besides my three (Brandon, Emily and Benjamin) in that school. I wonder how they do it when they have to rush to so many rooms. I guess that's what you call dedicated grandparents.
I saw some familiar faces at Grandparents Day. James and Mary Frances Herzog from Dobbin, and an old Dobbin neighbor who I didn't recognize and came up to me, Mrs. DiCarlo, and her daughter. I was so concerned about getting to Ty's room I overlooked her and was really embarrassed. I'm glad she came up to me because we all really enjoyed her and her late husband coming to Hoffart's and we miss them very much. Bertha Ann Sharp was there for her grandson, Tommy, and
I got a little visit in with her. Bertha Ann worked with us at Hoffart's for a long time, but is now a prison guard, much to my disbelief still.
Jacque and I baked some goodies to donate to the Fish Fry Fund Raiser for our favorite Texas Sheriff, Sheriff Don Sowell of Grimes County. We hope he had a successful day and we wish him the very best always. He is the bestlooking Sheriff that Texas has ever had. We love him and his family, Gail Hoffart Sowell and Ashleigh and Brandi and Clinton and his wife. He has been a very good sheriff for Grimes County and I hope he is elected by a big margin because he deserves this honor.
Last week Debbie Hoffart, Barbara Faughn, Phil and Lynn Deaton went out to eat on Monday at the Blaketree Grill on the Blaketree Golf Course right here in Dobbin off of 1486N. We have heard how beautiful it is out there and how good the food is that they serve. Well, it's the truth because we now know some people who have been there and done that. I had already heard about how beautiful the place is from my brother in law Craig and his wife, my sister, Josie. They drove out just to see the place after my daughter Jacque kept telling them about the Golf Course. Craig is a golfer and likes to check out different courses. This place is open to the public.
We have two new babies to talk about. My sister, Mary, and her husband, Dave, have a brand new grandson they are so proud of named Anthony Thomas Stevens. He has a big brother Nicholas and his parents are Tom and Jill Stevens. This is my great nephew and I can't wait to see him. Babies are precious gifts from God. Grandbabies are extra special gifts from God. Welcome little Anthony, we love you. Congratulations all !!!!! The other little baby boy lives just down the street on Smith Rd. His name is Timothy Taylor and it took us forever to find out about him. When I walk with cousin Elizabeth we talk with his big brother,
Charlie. When we thought the baby might have come we asked Charlie, but he wouldn't tell us anything. Finally, one day his mother was outside with the baby and we got to ask questions and get answers. We welcome Timothy to our world here in Dobbin. Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Robert Taylor and
Charlie!!!!
I have a special announcement about an engagement (my first time for this) right here in Dobbin. This young man I have known since he was born probably. He is very special as he has sung at our Church at so many special occasions and we all love him very much. Apparently this young lady does too, so here goes. Our Jason Keasling, son of Floyd and Cynthia, has given me permission to announce his engagement to Silvia Helena Borin/Armelim formerly of Brazil and now living in Bentwater. They are planning an April wedding at St. Mary's Church in Plantersville, Texas. We are so proud for them and wish them all the happiness in their marriage.
Now for all the sick ones we ask for your special prayers to help them on their way with their particular problems. Charlie Lechinger Jr, is having a really bad time with his arm since an accident a few months ago. It just isn't healing and now he has infection in the bone. He is in Galveston at John Sealy Hospital and the family is in a real financial bind. There is suppose to be a benefit planned for him and I will certainly pass any information on to all of you.
Ruth Lee Jones is on the sick list and we hope all will remember her. I sent her an angel food cake with my love and best wishes. Her daughter said everyone has been so nice to her and she deserves it all.
Dee Giles' mother is 97 years old and is also on the sick list and is cared for very well by Dee.
Charity Riles is being cared for by daughter, Elvia Reid, and her brother Red helps out when he can. Elvia has a job to do and she is doing it, I admire her as I know it is very hard when a parent is that sick.
Debbie Mahon has had a complete knee replacement and came home before the week was up. She is having a very hard time and we hope with time she is feeling much better. This is a hard operation to recuperate from. We hope she will be strong and follow the doctors orders. I sent a little food to help out. She told me she was sick the next day throwing up. I hoped it wasn't the food, but she said no, that was delicious, it's just her. Thank goodness, I was going to quit cooking for anyone.
Betty William's husband fell and broke his hip. He had a very bad time with the medicine they gave him, but finally they operated and we are hoping he is doing better. This is Kathy Stewart's father and the family will be glad for your prayers during his recovery.
My older brother, Charlie's, wife has been having a very bad time with her legs and has been hospitalized. Charlie is a very devoted husband and has been by her side through all her bad times with strokes and the problem with her legs. I am very proud of him for his devotion to her, besides all he has done for our family through the years since my father died at the age of 63. He helped raise all the younger children because he wasn't married at the time and he was the oldest. He will always hold a special place in my heart for all he did for my mother and younger brothers and sisters. I was already married with 3 children and couldn't be much help at that time.
All of us have people who need help and prayers. Always keep your eyes open and see if your neighbor or someone in your family needs a helping hand, and then give it to them. We will all need help some time. Remember, it is always better to give than to receive. This is very true. It makes your heart feel good to help someone else out in their need.
Here's a special double birthday wish going out to sisters who share the same birthday but not the same year. Gillian and Jennifer Wagner, granddaughters of Betty Kerr, had their birthdays on September 5th, 2004. Gillian was 18 and Jennifer turned the big 21. We hope they enjoyed their birthdays. Both are very pretty young ladies. We know Betty is proud of them.
My oldest granddaughter, Melinda Sue Carrell, will turn the big "16" on September 27th, 2004. She started celebrating on August 27th by inviting some of her friends to go with her to see Cross Canadian Ragweed at the Sam Houston Race Park. They all had a really fun time.
On Monday September 6th Melinda and her mom, Jennifer, and her friend Adam went to the Rainforest Cafe in the Katy Mills Mall for another early celebration of her birthday. Her mother informed the waiter what they were doing so they had Melinda stand on a chair and everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to her. Melinda should be able to remember her 16th birthday.
The weekend before Adam took his two daughters to Washington on the Brazos for a little birthday celebration for his daughter, Hailey. She turned 3 years old on September 1, 2004. They were joined by Jennifer and friends Randy, Heather and Tommy Moore. A good time was had by all.
A resident of Dobbin passed away September 6, 2004 in College Station, Texas. Mr. Louis C. (Gus) Gostecnik was born November 17th, 1912. His funeral serviced were held at 2 pm. Friday at the First United Methodist Church of Brookshire with Reverend Jim Thomson officiating. Burial followed at the Pattison Methodist Cemetery. His good friend and neighbor, Butch Smith, informed us of his passing and we thanked him for being such a good friend to Mr. Gostecnik.
See you all right here next week........ |
