Big times in Dobbin
Saturday night at Holder's Grubwagon in downtown Dobbin was another fun time as Karl and Jerome sang and played their good country music. Their usual loyal fans showed up along with some new faces. The food must have been good as there was a steady line ordering until Bobby closed it down over an hour after his regular hour of closing. Jerome and Karl played on and people stayed around to listen. A good time was had by all again. Karl and his wife Cindy were celebrating their 5th Wedding Anniversary that night and Cindy's mom shared a yummy oatmeal raisin sheet cookie with all of us around them. Their daughter, Catherine, had a really good time playing around and checking out the other little children. She's a precious little one. Son, Alex, is getting to be part of the band as he got up there 3 times this Saturday. I think he may become a regular soon. Some people from St. Mary's Church in Plantersville came by to enjoy the music. I didn't get all the names, but we visited with 2 couples who seemed to be really enjoying the food and the music and company. Also Dr. Krenek and his wife were there and some friends of Karl's, James Lynch and wife. Another friend of Karl's made me feel like a celebrity when he asked if I was the Ann Smith who writes the column in the paper. He is Luther Wench from Bentwater with a farm in Dacus. We had a nice conversation and I told him to drop any news he may have in Mock's or Hoffart's box. He didn't ask for my autograph, so I guess I haven't hit celebrity status yet.
Amy's parents Jerry and Sarah Holland have been faithful followers of these fun nights, along with James and Joyce Price, Uncle Mike and Aunt Sheila, Jennifer Smith, my niece, Tina , came to watch from A&M when her mother told her Jerome was playing, Jacque Smith, Janette Smith Arellano and son Michael ( with bandages on his forehead, he's 2 yrs old), myself and Karl's wife, son, daughter, mother and father in law, and Steve, the telephone man, who hasn't missed a gig yet, along with his girlfriend and the children. The Hoskins from Dobbin with sister Jackie came for supper and were pleasantly surprised with the added attraction. Jeff Williams and his wife were joined by sister Kathy Stewart and husband Rick and son Richard. Kathy has known Jerome since his school days at Montgomery. I know I missed some people. We need to have a sign in book, so I won't hurt any feelings. We did greatly miss the presence of Monika Diehl and her sister Mary Lou Dennis as they are always there. It must have been something really important for Monika to miss her favorite song. I'll let everyone know when the next gig comes up.
Thanks everyone for supporting Karl and Jerome. They really enjoy these nights.
We have another new baby in Dobbin. Verna Raglin informed me she is a grandmother for the second time with the birth of a healthy baby girl born on Thursday, September 16, 2004 weighing 6 lbs 1 oz and named Jatyrie Antique McDonald. She is the second child of Verna's daughter, LaToya Raglin. Welcome Jatyrie!!!! This makes Mammie Carter a great grandma again, but no one could tell me how many times.
Betty Kerr gave me an update on her great niece and nephew who were born prematurely. Riley is weighing 4 lbs and 12 oz. and Sam 5 lbs 3 oz. and they are doing really good, still in the hospital, just waiting for their lungs to catch up so they can go home. Parents, Kelly and Darren are doing good keeping up with working and going to the hospital and waiting for things to get back to normal (?) when the babies come home. At least they'll be in their own home. Grandparents, Jannet and James took a small vacation to Lake Buchannon and will be ready to help out when they do have the babies at home. Good luck to this family. We are so happy for you and your new babies. Maybe in a few months you'll come by Hoffart's store and show them off. We'll look forward to that day.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Ella Hoffart and her family on the death of her son, Freddie, Jr. who has been seriously ill for a long time. He passed away and was buried on Tuesday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Plantersville. Freddie, Jr. was a nephew to Mr. Hoffart and cousin to his children and a nephew to Betty Kerr also.
Ruth Lee Jones was brought home Friday with hospice coming in to help the family. She died Sunday night and I know she is in her heavenly home now. Our thoughts and prayers are with all her family and friends. Ruth Lee was a lovely person to know and I enjoyed our conversations when she came by the store. I'm proud to have known her and will miss her along with all her family and everyone who knew her.
Last Saturday I was going from morning until late evening. At 9:30 am at the Bells of Montgomery Chapel in Montgomery, Texas, Shane Massingill and Tracy Lee Sandoval were united in Marriage. It was a lovely ceremony. The chapel looked beautiful. A champagne brunch followed at the April Sound Country Club in the Ascot Room. James and I attended along with two of our daughters, Jennifer and Jacque, and our son, Jerome. It was a lovely morning and we were proud to be there for Shane and Tracy to wish them happiness in their marriage. After the brunch they were on their way to Galveston to go on a cruise. I believe it's the same one I will be going on next Monday. It will probably be on the same boat. We all wish them a Happy Honeymoon.
Saturday afternoon I attended a baby shower in Shiro, Texas held in honor of Jessica Sanchez and her baby to be. It was a lovely shower filled with lots of baby presents, games to play, prizes for everyone, good food and delicious punch made by the baby's great grandma Shirley Carrell. Shirley has raised Jessica and her two sisters, Tiffany and Amanda, every since their mother died with cancer when they were young girls. They are lovely young ladies now and still call me "Grannie Annie". Of course, I love that. They are first cousins to my oldest granddaughter, Melinda Sue Carrell.
I will be leaving on my cruise with my sister, Pat, on Monday afternoon, October 4th. I've been looking forward to this cruise ever since she told me on Mother's Day that I was invited to go along with her as a gift from her daughter and son in law, Tricia and Wes Stringfellow. We are going to have a lovely, relaxing time together just as we did as teenagers when we traveled up North together to visit our family up there. I will be thinking of everyone and promise to take notes so I can report to you all about our experiences on "the cruise".
Hopefully, I will have my article ready to send in by next week so I won't miss a week.
Thanks to all my faithful readers for letting me know you do enjoy reading this, it keeps me wanting to continue. I guess I'm not boring you, yet. See you right here next week... |
