Christopher Reeves, "without hope we have nothing"
by Ann Smith
Christopher Reeves died Monday, October ll, 2004. He was the actor who played the Superman Role. He was in an accident with a horse and had a serious spinal cord injury. He asked his doctor at one point how long it would be until there would be a cure to fix this and was told about 7 years away. From that point on Christopher Reeves has done everything in his power to help find that cure, knowing he probably wouldn't be around when it came through. He was always doing everything he could to help himself, going way beyond the doctors' expectations for him. He always encouraged anyone with a disability to not give into their problem, but work on doing all they could do in spite of the problem. This man was truly a Superman in his life. The doctors who were working with him were all brokenhearted upon hearing of his death. He had been still working with them for the cure. He had determination and single-mindedness, saying "without hope we have nothing" and always encouraging the doctors to "work for the cure". He was blessed with a wonderful wife who lived out her vows in her marriage, for better or worse, in sickness and in health. She has been right there by his side all along. He was an inspiration to all children and adults in wheel chairs, helping them to have hope and courage to handle what had been dealt to them. The doctors said his legacy should read "We will have a cure". He never gave up, his time just came. God bless Christopher Reeves and all of his family. He will always be remembered for his strength and the strength he passed on to so many others.
One of our own from Dobbin passed away on Friday, October 8th, 2004. Mr. John Williams was the husband to our own Betty (Boomer) Williams and father to Kathy Stewart and Jeff Williams. Mr. Williams was 83 yrs old and had recently fallen and broken his hip. I thought all was going ok, but he took a turn and God called him home. The family feels the thoughts and prayers from all their friends and appreciate all that has been done for them. Please keep them in your prayers.
October 20th will be the birthday of #8 in our family, Humphrey Hughes. I certainly want to wish him a very happy day. He is definitely a good brother to us all as he and his wife, Linda, have contributed a lot to our family, keeping us close together during holiday times and other time during the years. We all appreciate all they have done through the years. They both have had some serious medical problems these last few years, but somehow keep going on and doing all they can do for others. Humphrey is taking classes to become a massage therapist so he will be able to help the elderly and others when he retires as a ministry to others. I am so proud of him for wanting to help people who are in pain. My very best wishes go to him and his wife, Linda. God bless you both for all you have done and are doing.
Another October birthday wish goes out to Ms. Marie Cook of Dobbin who will celebrate her special day on October 27th. Marie has lived through good time and bad times and has been having medical problems the last few years. She has kept the Faith and knows God is walking with her every step of the way every day. We all need to take one day at a time, knowing God is always with us no matter what problems we are facing and He will not let us down if we believe. Thanks, Marie, for these thoughts and know we are wishing you a special birthday for a special lady.
Docky Martin was in an accident with his horse last week and was taken by life flight to Houston. They were watching him close and are hoping everything will be ok and he may get to come home soon. Maybe by next week I'll have more of an update. Keep Docky in your prayers.
I had a lovely time on the cruise with my sister. I was going to start telling you all about it this week, but after all that other news, I'm not really in the mood. I guess I'm still trying to get my land legs back, everything seems to be in motion. I never got sea sick, but I am still rocking with the boat, and boy did the boat rock (in more ways than one.) Maybe by next week I'll have it all together better. It was a lovely relaxing time with my sister, Pat, and I am sure glad they picked me to be the one to join her.
This weekend we are having a sister's weekend at Pat's lakehouse in Willis. I am going to bake desserts and am also thinking up a game for us to play. I'll fill you in on that next week too, so please come back and I'll see you then.
