Who We Are

November 10, 2004

Express gratitude to all of our Veterans. Thursday, November 11, 2004
by Ann Smith

I would like to take this time to express my personal gratitude to all of our
Veterans. Thursday, November 11, 2004 will be Veteran's Day and it is a
day for all of us to be thankful for all those men and woman, past and present,
who have given and are giving of themselves to protect all of us and our Freedom. Please keep all of our servicemen and women in your thoughts and prayers.
I have family November birthdays to remember. As I told you last week, one
of my 5 brothers, Joe, celebrates his birthday on November 10th. I forgot to
mention among his other duties he is involved in the Habitat for Humanity program. He should be nominated for volunteer of the year. Happy birthday, Joe, we all love you. On November 16th, my oldest grandson, Brandon Smith, celebrates his 12th birthday and we all wish him a happy day. How fast they do grow. Brandon does very well in school and we are all very proud of him. Then the next day his dad, my oldest son, Jim Smith, will turn 39 years old. Now how
is that possible he has gotten so old? HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALL!!!!!!!!!!
What a lovely 45th Reunion Weekend we had this past weekend ! On Friday
evening around 31 of us classmates from the class of 1959 from Incarnate Word
Academy gathered at the lovely home of our classmate, Sonja Hlavaty Novo, who
lives in the Heights in Houston. Sonja was a gracious hostess and welcomed all
of us with open arms. As each came in they were given a name tag with their
picture and name on it for all to glance at to jog our memories. Some had not
seen each other since graduation day. It was so much fun watching each other
glance at the pictures and names to really know who we were greeting. It was
an evening filled with hugs and renewed acquaintances.
We had a small memorial service for the eleven classmates that we know have
passed away. I was asked to light a candle for Eve Vicknair and I was so proud
to because she was a good friend of mine right up to the time of her death at a
very young age. I happened to meet her sister, Diane, the next day at the luncheon and filled her in on our gathering. I believe she was touched by that. I met my husband through their brother, Bill. They were good friends through school as Eve and I were. It is a small world. After the beautiful memorial service we had a table set up with snacks and everyone helped themselves. I had brought a lot of deviled eggs and some kolaches and they were very well received. I even have a date with one classmates to teach her how to make them as they remind her of her grandmother's kolaches. It was an evening to remember and those who didn't make it were disappointed when everyone was talking about the good time the next day at the luncheon. The luncheon was held on Saturday, Nov. 6th, 2004 at the Omni Hotel in Houston. That hotel is located in a beautiful spot and the dining room was decorated beautifully in a Christmas Theme with the colors being white and silver and gold. The tables were decorated with the same colors and each one had either a beautiful Angel Centerpiece or a Santa Claus Centerpiece, both with the white and silver and gold colors. We were entertained by current students from IWA as they sang some beautiful songs for us. The lunch was very delicious and served to us so nicely.
We ended up having the most women present in our class of 1959 and that won us
a meal together at Carrabba's Restaurant on a day of our choice. That means some of us will have another get together before too long. I will look forward to that. Everyone agreed our Reunion was a great success. A few of us had been working really hard through the year to contact as many as we could and wished for the good turnout that we had. Forty of us attended the luncheon. Our class was 112, I believe, and 11 have died that we know.
I want to thank my daughter, Jacque, for driving me on Friday night and picking me up when the party was over. I'm not one to drive at night in Houston. I also thank my sisters, Mary and Winnie, for attending the luncheon (they are graduates too from other years). Mary picked me up at my mother's and drove us right there. They made my weekend much less stressful. I never really thought I would see all those people ever again. It just was like a dream come true for me. The warm feeling that was present was felt by all. We were all just
so happy to be around each other again, even for just a short time. Now we all are back in our own little worlds again, maybe just a little better for having met with some of our past.
See you here again next week.
