I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Holidays
by Ann Smith
I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Holidays and everyone is home safe and sound. We certainly did have a lot of bad weather with many beautiful trees being uprooted. I did not hear of anyone being hurt, so we are thankful for that.
We picked up our Tarkington grandchildren on Tuesday afternoon and drove through
some rough weather coming back with them right outside of Dobbin and all the way to our house. That night something roared over our house on Smith Road and had all four of the grandkids wanting to sit on my lap. We decided to sit on the couch and say some prayers. Then we decided to make up some poems. By the time we all said something funny the storm was quiet and they all went to sleep. Even though the weather didn't cooperate we had a good time with Brandon, Emily, Benjamin and Sophia and we delivered them back to their father on Thanksgiving morning. My brother, Bernie, from Oregon came to Dobbin for a quick visit before moving on to my sister, Winnie's in Spring for their Thanksgiving feast. Jennifer and daughter Melinda paid us a short visit and were on their way.
Our Thanksgiving Day was quiet from then on and we even got a nap in after we
had our feast. That evening Jacque came back from my sister Winnie's home in
Spring where they had a big celebration. She brought Winnie's son Patrick and his wife, Jill, from Florida and his brother Robert and sister Nicole and our nephew Thomass Palermo for a visit with us We served them deer sausage at their request. It was a fun visit as Patrick hasn't been out this way in quite a while. My sister, Therese, and her daughter, Tina, (Thomas' sister) also
came out that night to work on the picture scrapbooks for Tina's A&M Graduation party in December. Therese and Tina spent the night, the other's went on their way. Therese finished up by early afternoon on Friday. In the meantime, I taught Tina how to make homemade dessert kolaches from scratch. She did a very good job and they were delicious. I told her she couldn't graduate from A&M without knowing how to make kolaches from scratch. Now she can graduate.
On Friday Jacque, Jerome and Amy went into Conroe to rent a 35-ft. man lift to decorate our 40-ft. cedar tree in our front yard. While there, they were talking to a young man who turned out to be a Dobbinite. They asked if he knew "Ms. Ann" from Hoffart's and he said of course he did. It turned out that Jacque had gone to school with his sister. I'm glad I had to go to work at 2 pm. because I would have been a nervous wreck with all the kids around and that machine going up and down. I'm not good in situations like that. When I came home at night it was dark and I got a good look at their hard work. It is a
beautiful sight to see. I even got in the lift on Saturday and let him send me all the way up, it was really pretty to look out at all of the neighborhood.
We finally got to celebrate my sister, Ginny's, 50th birthday on Saturday night in Houston at Tony's restaurant on Ella Blvd. She looked beautiful with her pretty brown eyes and brown hair. There were 23 of us there helping her celebrate. Sisters included myself with my daughter, Janette and her son Michael, Winnie with her husband, Pat, their daughter Nicole, son, Robert
and girlfriend, Jennifer, Therese and husband, Tom, son Thomas and daughter Tina, Ginny and friend David and Ginny's son Josh, Josey and son Kyle and his
friend. The brothers able to attend were Humphrey and wife, Linda, and their daughter, Amy and her daughter, Jayme, and our youngest brother, Bernie, who came down from Oregon for a Thanksgiving visit. Our niece, Stephanie, was there representing her mother, my sister, Mary, who was at home with her husband, Dave, who is recuperating from hip surgery. We all enjoyed our meals and eating birthday cake. We all had a good time and wish Ginny many, many more happy birthdays.
Cousin Elizabeth and I went to wrap Christmas presents for the children at the Lay Apostolate on Sunday. There were quite a few volunteers there wrapping and we helped until 3:30 when it was just about all wrapped. They will be making a lot of children happy this year as they have been doing for the past 5 years. The Lay Apostolate is always looking for good volunteers to help them with their work. Also donations would be welcome to help the ministry with its works of mercy for all the people they help during the year. If you are interested you can contact Linda Williams.
We attended the funeral of an old friend on Wednesday at St. Mary's. Mr. Anton Mattern was a first cousin to my mother-in-law, Dorothy Smith, and he was the father of 14 children and the husband of Catherine Mattern. He was 92 yrs old and led a very good life with God always a big part of his life. He was a cotton farmer in Plantersville for a long time. Everyone will miss him, but we know he is in a better place now.
Now it is time to think about Christmas coming. Time to write out cards and bake cookies and desserts, gather some presents, decorate the yard and the house. We also should take time to remember what Christmas is all about. Christmas is Jesus' birthday. What shall we do for that? See you next week.
