by You Know Who

Hey Ya’ll as promised I’m going to write about the Brackettville Recreational Activities Together Society henceforth known as BRATS! Actually that the "Pockets" whitetail hunting lease run and guarded by Tommy "Mr. Parts" Imhoff! Tommy has to run it because "Pockets" was put in charge of the Montgomery-Dobbin 4-H, otherwise known as MD4H and "Pockets" has assured me that everything is OK! But really I visited with Tommy a good time ago and promised him some "INK" on their deer lease. It sounded like all had a great time and actually I got the real scoop from Randy "Ceiling Man" Beken last Friday at the MD4H Valentine Dance. It seems that "Pockets" put his stand ten feet away from camp (not 50yds as he admitted) so that he wouldn’t get his four-wheeler dirty but actually it was so he could watch the Alamo Village ticket gate because "Pockets" is part owner! OR! How about Tommy’s claim of killing his trophy Eight-point right behind the ear running at one thousand yards. How about Dennis killing a huge Ten-point "Basket" rack with a "Daisy Red Rider" and the two Rio Grande Turkeys he got with a SLANG SHOT, while stick hunting! Now probably the only true story is Jordan Beken’s seven-point. Jason Beken claimed to have killed a Big Twelve-point but upon inspection there were only three on one side and three on the other--Jason, these are white tails not Mule Deer. B.R. "Mr Dynamite" spent most of his hunts killing time, but Mom Gina claims to have killed a trophy and claims its the first deer she’s ever killed--Sharon, AK-47's are not considered legal hunting weapons! Mark Hollie’s story has to be the best--his claim was a trophy eight-point came out at approximately five hundred yards, he leveled his 400 Weatherby Magnum with its 10X500 power Leopold scope, squeezed off a shot, with the bullet going through the ears then ricocheting off the horns into the neck and "El-Morte". When the smoke cleared the deer laid five feet in front of him-HUH! Junior Driver wants everyone to know that he got his feeder up this year and with additional "scouting" should have his stand up by next year. Tommy, why would the Nogales Border Patrol be interested in ya’lls whereabouts? Late report just in--"Pockets" reports that the sale of their "Aluminum Scrap" should pay for next year’s lease. Go figure.

I know how my friend and fellow journalist Debbie Slayton felt when she wrote about the dedication of our MJHS coaches. I saw a teacher Ms. Brenda Storseth, almost in tears last Saturday, when a group of Montgomery Junior High drama students participated in the UIL One Act Play competition. The placement of our group in this district competition was definitely not comparable to these young people’s effort but as most of us realize there can only be one winner. From this writer’s viewpoint I can’t comment on the first and second place teams because they had already competed when I arrived, but I can assure my readers that the Montgomery students did not deserve their final ranking. I will say that our students were audible, well prepared, well directed and their dialect was certainly understandable unlike some of the others. My other concern was, why would there be only one judge for such an important event? I have said this before and I will say it again, I am not concerned about my son winning or losing, but how he plays the game. All of our students were outstanding and its obvious that their performance was fueled by a caring teacher. Ms. Storseth hold your head high because we as parents will not judge you by winning or losing but rather how our students play the game. To Cody’s fellow actor/actress Ashley Vandenheuval, you and your fellow New Yorker’s did a great job, so don’t let one person’s opinion dampen your spirit! To the rest of the cast thanks for making this writer’s Saturday and enjoyable day. All of you will go far in life!

From Montgomery’s Sagebrush Philosopher, Until next time, Good Rope’n. Good Steer Dogg’n. Have fun at the Rodeo! Go Ags.
