| Curran Events Hey Ya’ll. Sorry about last week but I had writer’s cramp, actually Monte sent me down to Houston--NEVER AGAIN! Speaking of Monte--Thank goodness you’re OK and your incident will be part of my topics for this article. For those of you who don’t know Monte had a "harrowing" experience while returning from Brenham with the weekly MCN. Monte was a few miles from the Montgomery County Line on SH 105 when a pick-up truck came upon him at a high rate of speed and began "tailgating" him. It was so close to him that Monte actually improved their gas mileage because the truck was "drafting" on Monte’s bumper! He could see that the driver and passenger were young so he simply motioned them to back-off. An no he did not use the International High Sign to persuade them. When it appeared that they were not going to back down, he slowed hoping that they would go around. It was then that he saw the Nickel Plating the passenger (I believe) had a weapon and Monte saw him "Jack" a round into the chamber. In an effort to save his life Monte hit the ditch and luckily the truck continued on and Monte was not badly hurt. Fortunately, Monte carries a police scanner with him and by placing a cell-phone call to the dispatcher and since our local law enforcement could hear Monte’s conversation they were able to set up a road-block between Dobbin and Montgomery. When surrounded the "Perps" admitted they had threatened Monte and imagine the surprise of the officers when it was discovered that the weapon was realistic looking but it was only a BB gun! Three scenarios could have come out of this idiotic act, first the unthinkable Monte could have ben killed or seriously injured, second if the vehicle these nuts were chasing had been driven by another nut with a real weapon then someone could have been shot and thirdly if these ignorant youngsters had brought the weapon out when stopped by the law enforcement officers then a young person could be dead today. What has gotten into some of the youth today? Is it too much TV? My second topic also deals with youth. Imagine my reaction when I noticed two young people driving a small blue Chevy truck coming down the driveway between the MHS Stadium and the MJHS practice field at an unsafe rate of speed, stop at the West End Zone and pick up two young ladies (they appeared to be Lady Bear Track team members) and the two young ladies jump into the bed of the truck! At first they were sitting on the sides but when the driver decided he was in an Indy race, thank God, the two young ladies sat down into the bed of the truck, because just as they did the driver decided to start swerving in and out of the parking spaces. If the young ladies had not sat down then one or even two of them would have been thrown to the pavement and at the speed this kid was going someone could have been hurt or worse. Now I’ll be the first to admit that my children are not perfect, they do things wrong and I as a parent have not always set a good example, but I’ll assure you that they drive safer than most and that’s due to my experiences at investigating accident scenes for TX-DOT and sharing some of that with them. With the lighter requirements for obtaining a license and with many parents just turning these kids loose with a LETHAL WEAPON more and more are getting hurt! Now some of you may be asking why didn’t you stop the kid or report him????? Well, it happened so fast I could not get a plate number and if I had pursued him I would have been just as guilty because there would have been two vehicles speeding through the school’s parking lot. Instead I know the truck color and remember it well so next time I see it I’ll get a number and report it to the police! Try driving down SH 105 or FM 149 after school lets out each day-- a great deal of these kids need a WAKE UP CALL! I sure wish we could give some discipline back to our educators because its apparent their not getting it at home. One of my biggest pet peeves is to hear a parent say that a teacher can’t teach because their "Little Johnny or Little Suzy" is never wrong and that they got a bad grade or got into trouble because the teacher doesn’t know what they are doing! Now that I’m much older I look back and remember when I tried to used the same excuse to my parents. A teacher never gave me a bad grade or "Popped" my behind for doing something wrong because he or she couldn’t teach- I Earned It! From Montgomery’s Sagebrush Philosopher. Until next time Safe Driving, Don’t Drink and Drive, Hug Your Kid. Go Ags. Adios |
