| Curran Events Hey ya’ll, last weekend was one of those kinds of weekends that causes you to and think about how lucky we really are. It started Saturday morning at 6:20 am when Cody and I met good friend Stuart Traylor at "King’s", we were waiting for another good friend Curtis Golden. When Curtis arrived we picked the lock and made ourselves at home, while Renee "spiffed" up before opening the door. Liz told me Monday that she would just get Laurie at Ace Hardware to make us our own key! While we discussed our GAME PLAN for the day we hade coffee and orange juice, just three good friends and one young man getting ready to work cows up at Curtis’ Ranchette on Osborne Rd. We left our office (That’s what we call King’s - Liz doesn’t charge us no rent) at about 7:20 am just in time to see Keith "Twiggy" Wiggins and Delbert Johnson go by hauling the horses. "Twiggy" and Delbert are two other long time friends slated to help us out at the ranch. Both of them were running a little late because they had taken their better halves to Margarita’s o Friday night. "Twiggy" had gotten into a Margarita tasting contest and lost. Anyway, they honked as they drove past and we followed in behind to make the trip up FM 149 to the Cow Pens. There was not really anything special about this cow working, each man had his own chore, usual stuff, ear notching, pour-on wormer, pour-on fly control, shots, and the making of the Bull to the Steer routine. But this was special because "Twiggy" called on Cody to throw the calves and I swelled up with pride as he did his work. Make no mistake about this bunch including myself cut him no slack. It was just one of those details that require you to be there to appreciate. Good job Cody! After the cows and calves were sent back to pasture we loaded up and went to lunch. Liz dang near ran us out because of the smell but she backed-off when she saw the appetites. It was great, just friends helping friends and giving nature a boost and giving man a memory he’ll have for a lifetime. Next came a visit to the Old Cotton Gin, again a trip that provided same nostalgia as I watched "Barber John" give J. P. Clopton and Dad Ray a haircut the old fashion way. It took me back to a time when my Dad used to take me to Curley’s Barber Shop I=on the corner of Shepard and 26th street in Houston. Never could figure out why a guy that was as Bald-headed as Telly Savalas could be called Curley! Anyway the wealth of knowledge that poured out of that place was unforgettable. Hair today - Gone tomorrow. Now listen to this story - Cotton Roooose (That’s Cotton rouse, Bea’s way better half) claims to have seen a snipe with a four-foot wingspan, dragg’n a tow sack with a Cub Scout chas’n behind try’n to git his flashlight back! Cotton had spotted the Pre-historic, FEE-NAM-E-NON after Big City Slicker Development Co. had disturbed virgin Forest Land to build The Brookshire’s Mall. Why would they call it The Brookshire Mall, this is Montgomery? Said creature was taking a drink from The Brookshire Sludge Pit. Charlie Stowe was spotted later that day BBQ-ing the large bird! Charles Wellborn wanted to see the Health Permit and what was he charging for this Gourmet Delicacy. Speaking of nostalgia, I also got to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Marmaduke the other day, that’s Brad Anderson and his better half. Brad is the gentleman who brought the Great Dane, "Marmaduke" to life and you can still see him in newspapers today. Good to see ya’ll. My week was capped Sunday as we listened to Dr. Bobby Berry bring Mother’s Day sermon to us at Honea Baptist Church. At the end of the service as the ones who had Mother’s with them that day could come up and get a carnation to give to their Mom’s. Three generations of Bowen’s had the honor of presenting our Mom’s their flowers. Me to my mom, Cody to his mom (Jerri Sue) and Koltin to his mom (Mine and Jerri Sue’s daughter Kayla) what memories! Like the TV commercial, Breakfast $9.95, Lunch $12.95, Spending time with family - Priceless. From Montgomery’s sagebrush philosopher, until next time, Good Cow Call’n, Good Frog Gigg’n, and GO AGS!
