| Curran Events Hey Ya’ll! Well it’s been an exciting week, got some new names to add to my cast of characters and some s’plan’n to do. Also I promised a story about some folks of the past! First I got the pleasure of meeting another of MISD’s great educators. I don’t know for sure if the young lady knew how to take some of the members of the END-RUN executive board but Ashley’s mom, Tracey Larson had to deal with me, Curtis, Markey and Fred last week. Bless her heart, too bad Liz didn’t have a chance to warn her. Tracey (I hope that’s the correct spelling) is a teacher at the Middle School a school where my other heroes ply their trade. Tracey we welcome you back and promise not to ask if your husband Don is any kin to the Great Yankee pitcher by the same name. By the way--A BIG WAY TO GO ! To Don and his fellow Montgomery Fire Fighters--Hope you passed your test Don! Now to the s’plan’n I need to do. I talked to several of ya’ll about my comments on the recent sidewalk addition to our town. First, I was incorrect with my lane width’s, but I’ll assure ya’ll that there is some very narrow passes that will have to be made! Again, let me say, I like the sidewalks, they are going to be a welcome during special events especially if its raining, but I know how some of those ambulance chas’n lawyers can twist things around. I just hope those Curb Stops don’t jump up and bite someone in the South Side of their North Bound body!!!! Looks like Tom Price is beginning a new board himself. He and brother David (we all call him Bo), son Zach and others of his crew held a back porch session the other day. He asked the crew to join him for a "Brewsky" but why did Markey have to pay the bill?!!!HUH! Oh, I forgot to mention that Tracey Larson and family are Dacus-ites--Beautiful downtown Dacus home of Jorges Meat & Grocery, T-Bone King of Texas. Ain’t it great to live in Smallsville? Got some exciting news for ya’ll. There will be a LIVE recording done soon at Holder’s Grub Wagon in Dobbin--ask Bobby for the details. Now for the story; John Lomax was a graduate of one of them BIG Eastern Preppie schools somewhere around the early 1900's. His passion was for music, not just any kind of music but Cowboy Music. After graduation he wanted to further his studies and he asked his Alma Mater for a grant to study the music culture of the American Cowboy. Not thinking it would be of any worth they turned him down. After almost giving up on his dream, he ventured to Texas and became friends with the great novelist and educator J. Frank Dobie. J. Frank was able to convince the powers to be at THE University (No, Mr. Ogg, not our school) that his research could prove valuable some day and Lomax received his grant. Years of research and study preserved some of the finest poetry, which later became songs and Western truism found anywhere. His work proved to be some of the best recollections of our Western heritage and it was during this time he found through his research an old Black Cowboy (his name unknown) who had gone down the trail as a wagon cook. It was during one of his trips that the Black Cowboy had penned the words to "Home on the Range" this song is still considered one of our Country’s Cowboy Anthem’s. Thanks to people like John Lomax we have a recorded period of our history in song and prose. From "Montgomery’s Sagebrush Philosopher" Until next time- Goods Cow Call’n. Good Frog Gigg’n and Go Ag’s!
