What’s Happening
By Brett Bowen

Hey ya’ll, boy I sure missed writing this article and thanks to the many of you who have passed along kind words, that’s the best "fodder" a writer (I sure use that term loosely) can have. Thanks.

My old friend Bobby Holder and I had a good visit lately and Bobby gave me these words of wisdom..."If you do not want to be criticized, then, say nothing, see nothing, and be nothing." author unknown. Speaking of Bobby, go by and visit him on "The Corner" what a nostalgic adventure! Bobby I can’t wait until you kick off the "Lake Creek Outfitters" tour from "Downtown" Dobbin to the Gulf of Mexico----look how successful San Antonio has been with the Riverwalk. Good luck Bobby.

Boy I sure admire you folks who drive to Houston daily to earn a wage, these past months I’ve been going down there to the Medical Center regularly and what a nightmare. Traffic, traffic and more traffic. I don’t see how ya’ll do it! Along with that I would like to send out my thanks to Rufus Williams, Suzanne Doty, Debbie Slayton, Bea Rouse and Ben Hancock. These wonderful people have helped "cart" me back and forth to my doctors, taking time out from their busy schedules to do so.

Speaking of kind deeds, congratulations go out to all those who recently helped re-build a local home damaged by fire. Although I am not aware of all the names involved it was a tribute to the caring concern of the community!

Here’s another fact that I’ve recently been made aware of, TIRR (Texas Institute for Research and Rehabilitation) has a "HERO!" its none other than Montgomery’s own Trevor Shockley. All of the staff at the hospital and those at the Challenge Program remember Trevor well. Thanks Trevor for being my inspiration during my ordeal.

In other happening’s Cody and I had a chance to visit with Mark Ivey recently out at his Fly’N I Ranch, (no, Regina it’s not the Fly N I Ranch, oh well I love you anyway), Mark is a great host and a "Super Aggie" he has done a great job of making "DDR" one of the best airports around......But Mark, are you sure that the non-stop Concorde flight from Navasota to Dobbin can land out there? You better get Cole and Isaac to install some type of catch net--you think?

Talking about Regina, you and Mike should think about "cruising" up to Canada on your "Hogs". Little known fact, Regina is the capital of Saskatchewan and as Mel Allen would say, "How about that!"

Bobby, it looks like we need to get "The Ranger" to commission the Golden Triangle Army and go up to Washington D.C. and find out what in the world is going on at the nation’s largest circus! Gary Condit, budget surplus, no wait...no budget surplus, in six months George W. Has spent all our money, can’t blame it on Bill Clinton he was just sitting at his desk interviewing interns. Really makes you wonder, don’t it? Hey I got it, let’s just blame it on Florida. Anyway our nation’s Capital has got to be the "Mecca" of perverse folly--That’s heavy. Maybe its time "we the people" dumped some more "Tea" in Boston Harbor, you and I know it wouldn’t do any good, cause old Ted would just have us all locked up for pollution, then he and his group of liberal spenders would just figure a way to let a government contract to some--let’s just say, a less fortunate contractor, do a ten year study on it’s impact, declare the Harbor a toxic waste area and expend "Jillions" of taxpayer dollars to clean it all up!

Now here’s where I walk the "Plank". What about the great Montgomery government Broo-Hah-Hah. In order not to incriminate myself I’ll just stop there on the subject, since I in no way want to go through the political "Chopping Block" again and be forced to defend my opinion. Let’s just end it by saying Good Luck to all that are involved, you sure got your work cut out!

Talking about touchy subjects why, just why couldn’t some more thought went into the massive "DE-STRUCTION" at the new shopping center site? Why couldn’t something have been done to preserve those beautiful "Pee-Cans" at Mr. T.J. Peel’s old home? It could have served as a commitment to restoring Montgomery’s historic past. A "showcase" entryway could have been done using these old trees as a way of blending the old with the new...don’t ya’ll think?

Thanks to Blake Kellum for sharing his feelings on the subject, as an overseer of some of God’s creation Blake knows the importance of leaving nature alone! What ever happened to "SAVE THE TREES" take a look at what Bobby Morris did out at the High School, some old oaks were left in place by just some advanced planning. Thanks Mr. Morris.

All is not lost though, some additional tax revenue could be gained at the "Shopping Center" Fred McMurry could organize the Great Montgomery Duck Shoot Out on the holding pond (Todd’s going to stock it with bass) and in the spring it could be the site for the first ever "Cane pole and Tow sack" fishing tournament.. I can just see it now, Five Thousand Bass Boats converge on Montgomery!

Big Howdy’s go out to all of our teachers, to Mr. Ogg who along with "Miss Bonnie" is sure being missed at the Junior High, to Coach Shifflet and his staff, to the Middle School car riders brigade and a special one to Peggy and Jerry..thanks to all.

From " Montgomery’s Sagebrush Philosopher" Until next time: Good Cow Call’n, Good Frog Gigg’n and Go Ags! It’s great to be back!

Adios
