| Curran Events Hey Ya’ll! Good to be back writing my article, I got some "Shut-eye" so its time to get back on the news! My first topic is of a sad note but fortunately its not the end of the world. For the last two years there has been a group of dedicated young men who have worked hard to represent their schools Montgomery Junior High and Montgomery High School respectfully. This group of young men have fought hard as a football ball team and until last Thursday have remained undefeated, two straight years and two games into this, the 2002 season. Sure, there were some tears shed by players, coaches and parents in Livingston last Thursday as this group of players known as the Freshman "A" team tasted defeat for the first time losing 12-6 to a physical Livingstonm Lion team. As of the writing of this article, no less than two and possibly three of these Young Bears are out for the remainder of the season! There are others with some bumps and bruises but rest assured they’ll have Bear Pride when they go to Willis this Thursday to take on the Willis Wildkat Freshman team. Most of you by now know these boys and are real familiar with some of the nick-names. I’ve given them over the past couple of years. I’ve taken great pride in being associated with all of them, their parents, their Junior High Coach they respectfully refer to as "Uncle Mel" and now this year the present coaching staff led by Coach Rice. These players know how I and MCN feel about them they know who they are and I believe they will take this experience and turn it into a positive learning lesson! So good luck coaches, players and GO MIGHTY BEARS! Now, on to other news. This Sunday, September 15th my family and I attended our churches 79th Homecoming . Congratulations Honea Baptist Church. It was very interesting to note that a good friend of mine Ray Clopton’s mother was a founding member and imagine the surprise on my mother’s face when Brother Ivan Madeley also announced that of the nine founding members a Mr. Jefferies of Marlin, Texas was in that group. My mother’s birthplace is Marlin. Today with all the argument over religion, prayer and the use of God’s name, this takes the spotlight when a local place of worship has a 79 year history going for it Awesome! Hey Doc! I loved your recent article on doing "thangs" Texas right and your last one on the use of National sayings as a foundation of this great country "YOU GO COWBOY!!" Got to visit with two characters lately, Fred "Jackrabbit" McMurry and Kenny Lewis. I’ll be joining them Saturday, September 21st at the Old Cotton Gin for Frontier Day. Good luck to Bea, Suzy Q, Edna Pearl, Barbara, Ronnie and all the volunteers, sponsors and others who are working to make this happen. Ya’ll come and have fun. I recently met the self proclaimed "Mayor of Walden" Mike, last name withheld due to possible embarrassment and spoke to him on some matters. Why would an avid salt-water fisherman want to live on a lake? His response was that he’s working on a new idea--huh? Later that same day the wife of the said mayor was seen buying all the salt Sam’s Club had in stock!!! he also stated he was involved in a massive aluminum can pick-up project, something about the proceeds going for the Country Club? Oh well! Big Way to GO! To Lloyd and Nancy on the opening of their new steakhouse the place looks great! Hey its great to see our young people go off to college and a couple of Saturday’s ago I got to see Nicole Hancock packed and headed to Blinn (Mother hen, Dawn was leading the wagon train). Good luck Nicole and all the other locals who began their quest for a higher education. Last but not least Cody and I got to visit with the greatest team on earth last week. The car-rider patrol at Montgomery Middle School. Good wishes to Ms. Woodley, Ms. Harwell, Ms. Spaugh, Ms. Guthrie, Ms. Hemken and to the new principal I met, Lee Allen. This group personifies Bear Pride You Go Girls! From "Montgomery’s Sagebrush Philosopher" Until next time--Good Cow Call’n. Good Frog Gigg’n and Go Ag’s Beat Virginia Tech! |
