What’s Happening
By Brett Bowen

"GOD BLESS AMERICA, LAND OF THE FREE, HOME OF THE BRAVE".

The events of last week have been on everyone’s mind and the vicious attacks on our country have brought about an outpouring of unity in our country. Acts of Patriotism, Prayer Vigils, Giving of blood, charitable giving and many other activities have occupied our thoughts and will continue to do so for many days to come.

Once again an enemy has "Awoke a Sleeping Giant" but this enemy carries no recognizable emblem nor does it represent any one nation. The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were carried out by cowards who hide after their deeds and it will take a monumental effort to bring an end to this type of warfare! The first war of the twenty-first century will be won only if we unite, support our leaders and act thoroughly and with caution. Hasty actions will only result in further turmoil.

The attacks have raised many questions, caused grief, anger, compassion and confusion, but this is America and she will prevail over this devious act of terrorism. Now is not the time to dwell on Party affiliations, liberal or conservative views, but rather concentrate on the task at hand. Make America and all Americans despite race, color, creed or religious affiliation safe from this type of hideous crime ever again. Many acts of bravery have happened and new heros will emerge, yet, there will also come to those who will try to profit unjustly from this devastation. At times such as these, we often loose our ability to recognize "scams" because our hearts are weak and our minds clouded. Be wary of those soliciting money without first checking their legitimacy, watch for price gouging and don’t fall prey to unscrupulous business practices.

America will now need to focus attention on better security, possible change lax immigration laws and we as people of this great nation need to slow down and be more aware of what is going on around us. Some laws need adjusting, and without becoming a "Police State" we must allow some latitude in defending our shores. We’ve got to work hard on "Not Offending" but "Defending". Its going to cause some inconveniences and yeas, its going to cost some money. Everyone from Corporate America to Government, from rich to poor will need to pitch in and help. Be reminded of John F. Kennedy’s famous statement, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but, what you can do for your "Country".

Do not judge other people because they appear to be what they may not be, as this has already taken place with many Americans who happen to be of Mid-Eastern decent being victimized unjustly. When we allow these acts, we place ourselves in the same category as those who attacked us. Because we are a nation of such diverse cultures identification of these perpetrators is not easy but according to news reports the ones responsible had left a trail of "red flags" for days. Perhaps our National Security needs a good overhaul.

The days of homemade ice cream on Saturday, sitting on the front porch, going to Grandma’s after church on Sunday for dinner, eating cold watermelon then taking a nap are from an era gone by. Many of you know my feelings on those things, but I’m afraid they are gone forever. We have entered a High-Tech, Fast Paced world that requires some monumental changes--Just hope that those changes work!

On the homefront, I attended a prayer vigil at my church on Tuesday, September 11 at eleven a.m. and prayers went out for some local people. Brad Palmer and Daryl Fauss were both on business trips for Spirit Industries in the Eastern U.S. thanks go out to Jenna and Sharon for letting me know they were safe.

For Justin Langley, Shawn McKee and Thomas McWhorter friends of my family who are away serving their country in the Armed Forces, prayer was to keep them from "Harm’s Way". I’m sure we had other locals caught up in some way in the confusion and I hope for good fortune to come their way. With all the Flag waving and support I couldn’t help be touched by a site I saw Sunday as my family left Honea Baptist Church. Two "bikers" (who often get classified unjustly) were coming up the road flying large American flags from the back of their motorcycles. I saw them and instantly gave them the "Thumbs Up" and they both returned the gesture as they rode by. That’s what its all about folks, "UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL".

From Montgomery’s "Sagebrush Philosopher" until next time. Good Cow Call’n. Good Frog Gigg’n and Go Ags!

Adios

P.S. Last week I lost a great friend-Mrs Mary McWhorter of North Zulch, Texas passed away Sunday, September 9th. I had the great pleasure of working on her ranch with her two sons Tommy and David. Prayers go out to her family as they deal with their grief.
