False Statements
Dear Editor,
I am responding to the article in the Weekend Magazine regarding the winning of a national prize by Old Montgomery Historic Preservation. The article was filled many misleading and false statements. The Courier should have made an effort to check out the story and get the view of the people from the north community in the city of Montgomery before submitting this very pretty story for a national award.
While yes, there was a meeting in late 2003 where as the community did attend. But it was not a love fest. The Mayor received an earful during this meeting, so much so that as a result she left the room in tears. The community was upset that the city has managed to provide sidewalks in the south part of town and not the north community. They were upset with the inequitable water system in the town and wanted the mayor to address these issues.
The most ridiculous part of the whole story is that as a result of this meeting in 2003, the community came together to start a civic organization. The truth is that the community has come together to protect itself from this mayor, who has met with County officials regarding acquiring block grant money to build housing to move the citizens of the north community off their prime commercial real estate to a site unseen.
Yes, we have taken responsibility for our community and are making some much needed changes. What's even more insulting, is that the mayor would take the very words that we spoke to her regarding us charting our own path for our community and claim them as her own. I have often heard this mayor say she is not a politician, but I beg to differ, I think that she is right up there with the best of them. Because only a good politician can take what someone else has accomplished and put a spin on it and make it their own.
Good job Madam Mayor!
Patricia Easley, President Town Creek Civic Organization of North Montgomery
