Let's Talk Some Facts
Dear Editor,
In the previous Montgomery mayoral race, I supported the current mayor. In this election I urge everyone to vote for Edith Moore for mayor. Why would I change leadership? Because the current mayor is not a leader I see as continuing to keep the heart of Montgomery beating. We all live here because of the small town nature, the wonderful diversity, the historical ambiance, and the easy proximity to these exemplary schools. Two years ago when the mayor asked me to serve on the Planning and Zoning Committee I jumped back into helping with city problems and solutions. That is where I got to know Edith Moore. I discovered in our endeavors that how things are accomplished is just as important as what is accomplished.
There might be a new City Hall site, but it is out in the middle of a cow pasture. Very few residents are aware of any meetings other than the normally scheduled ones. Special call meetings have little or no attendance. The residents are in the dark about many issues. Are any of you aware of the joint venture City Hall/Community Center that was deadended by the mayor? The possibility did not get introduced to the city council.
When the P&Z Committee passed and eight hundredacre Planned Development District, it was contingent on being overseen by an attorney expert in municipal law so as to protect the city. On December 16, 2003 that attorney told the mayor, "It would be dangerous to enter into that agreement right now." The legal PPD agreement needed more work. The mayor put the city's interest second to that of the developers. The attorney's was basically "let go". It was two months and eight days from when the PDD was applied for and when the council passed it. That was too quick when you look at a development of that magnitude and the possible liabilities to the city. The PDD offers many positive, but you do not realize how another thirty days would have ensured greater protection for the taxpayer. A traffic study was offered at no cost to the city or developer, yet the mayor rejected it. This should be of strong concern to anyone who travels FM 149 N between 1097 and 105. If there is a future problem it could be identified and rectified before it becomes impossible.
I have worked with both the mayor and Edith Moore these last two years. I have seen how ell Mrs. Moore handles problems, works towards thoughtful solutions, and is fair and openminded to everyone and their ideas. Please help Montgomery's growth move in a careful, wellplanned direction. Vote for Edith Moore for mayor!
Respectfully
Jennifer Stewart
