Who We Are

EDITORIAL COMMENTARY
Wednesday, May 12, 2004

To the Citizens and Council members of Montgomery,

I would like to take a moment of your time to express my disappointment and confusion on the recent issue with the First Baptist Church located on Hwy. 105. We, the Montgomery Fire Department, first got involved in this issue just three days prior to the City Council meeting, when the variance code was approved. Some interested parties came and asked our Assistant Chief to walk through the building and give his opinion if the sprinklers etc. were truly necessary. His reply and mine was an "absolutely, they save lives and property and extinguish fires prior to them getting out of control and endangering others property and firefighters lives." The sprinklers would extinguish a fire, due to early detection, with 5 to 6 gallons of water, where as a developed fire may take 1,000 plus gallons per minute to extinguish and hope no occupants, bystanders or fire fighters get injured.
We have recently been discussing with the Montgomery Independent School District the lack of sprinklers in their buildings and they are very large ones with a great life hazardOUR KIDS!!!!! These buildings were built with tax funds and with the life hazard. I do not know who allowed them to build schools with out sprinklers. We do not know if the school looked into sprinklers for the schools, but for the money, there is no better fire protection or insurance policy.
I think my point is that if the City of Montgomery has adopted a code, then they need to follow it VO VARIANCES! Although, the standard may have been set by the latest Council vote to allow the variance. If is not going to be followed or enforced, then do away with the code.
I have and will continue to support the City and any other group that looks at supporting fire safety issues that protect lives and property. I think the two City Council members who voted to enforce the fire codes, deserve a pat on the back, and hopefully others will follow their lead. The decisions made by the Council will affect this community in the years to come. So thanks to those members who supported the fire department's belief and the code currently in place "THIS BUILDING NEEDS SPRINKLERS".
