Parking
First impressions are very important when we meet people. Many times, it affects our future in a variety of ways. The City of Montgomery is no different. All of us, residents, shop owners, and restaurant owners, are ambassadors for our city. Imagine my shock when some visitors entered our shop last weekend. The two couples were intently discussing an incident that had just happened to them. My partner could tell that they were upset and not feeling good about Montgomery. She listened as they browsed around the shop; she was not eavesdropping as their voices were somewhat raised. It seemed as if they had parked in a lot close by and not in the street parking along McCown. Some individual approached them and in a very unfriendly way told them that they were not allowed to park there; that it was for their business only. The visitors said that they would be visiting all of the shops and assumed that parking there would be all right, as there was no sign stating differently. My partner apologized for the rude behavior of one of our business people and hoped that the one incident would not shorten their visit and that they would return.
This is very unfortunate; however, I have heard of this happening many times through other shoppers and from other businesses. This individual is a "one-man wrecking crew"! Parking is a problem in Montgomery and it's not going to get any better. WE HAVE TO SHARE! Most people come to Montgomery to visit several shops and will usually eat in one of our local restaurants. It is ridiculous to expect them to move their car each time they enter another business. That defeats the charm of our tiny town. We advertise park and walk, and that's what people enjoy about Montgomery. If I had to move my car each time, I would just leave all together. My husband and I own a small piece of property between Liberty and McCown and allow people to park there all the time. We don't particularly like how it looks, but it serves a purpose until we build on it. I don't go out there and tell them that if they park there, they may only visit my shop.
Remember, the charm of Montgomery is in our friendly citizens and the uniqueness of our town. The streets and lots were laid out over 150 years ago, long before cars, SUVs, and trucks traveled through our town. People visit Montgomery for a variety of reasons, but not to be yelled at by an over-reactive business owner. We rely on visitors and we want them to spread the word about our quaint little town and the very friendly people in the shops and restaurants. Please think before you speak and business owners, please talk with your employees about the image they project. If people quit coming to Montgomery, it will hurt us all and especially it will hurt the business represented by this very unfriendly person.
