EDITORIAL COMMENTARY

History lives on because of Ms. Bessie
from Monte D. West, Publisher, MCN
In this weeks paper you will find many mentions of the name Ms. Bessie Price Owen. Ms. Bessie as known to all old timers and many newcomers was and is the foundation to many of today's accounts of history in this part of Texas.
Ms. Bessie's touch not only affected history of the area, but she helped in so many other ways that many in the area are unaware of.
One such example of help she rendered was of this newspapers beginning. She was instrumental in teaching this Publisher/Editor in my early school days. She continued this assistance in the beginning of this newspaper by working with me in developing a weekly column of the "History of Montgomery."
This column was turned over to my oldest daughter Lacy.
She wouldn't necessarily give my daughter the answers to the questions she had about the subject matter of the upcoming article, but rather continued her teaching style by making Lacy find the answers by research.
She would give Lacy hints on where she might find the information, then Lacy would have to go find it, then have Ms. Bessie verify the correctness. And in her teaching style, would have her dig further into the history.
This teaching style unknowing to Lacy at the time, set her up for success in college and her current career.
So the tributes continue about Ms. Bessie's help with preserving the history of the area and also the contributions she made to today's success of the Montgomery area.
In the column "Off The Front Porch" by Donald Duncan, this week he made mention that perhaps one of Montgomery ISD schools should named after the one most important figures in Montgomery's history, "Ms. Bessie Price Owen". I agree with this tribute, she meets and exceeds all of the qualifications for this honor.
