In My Opinion...Not That You Asked
Selective Freedom of Speech
from Scot Bauer, Montgomery, Texas
It all started with the Dixie Chicks. They spoke their antiBush views to an audience, and there was a negative back lash. The Liberals defended the group under the guise of 'freedom of speech', which allows anyone to say basically whatever they want. Then came the MoveOn.org people, who spent millions of dollars on television ads defacing the President. Again, freedom of speech was preached by the Left. Michael Moore's antiBush mockumentary hit the theatres with all the fanfare of a great society that allows a difference of opinion to be stated. The Democrats praised the film, and called Moore "a great
American." All is alive and well in America, and freedom of speech ensures our greatness.
Then along came the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth crowd, and all that freedom of speech stuff changed. When this group of over 250 Vietnam veterans spoke out against Kerry and his 'heroic' actions during the war, the Left blew a gasket. In no uncertain terms, the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth organization has stated that John Kerry is nothing more than a selfpromoting, glory seeking coward.
Suddenly, the freedom of speech loophole needed to be closed. The Kerry crowd and the Democratic Party hit the panic button. How dare they say such a thing! Where do they get off contradicting our war 'hero'? They weren't even there! (Actually, they were.)
The ugly fact remains: almost all of the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth members are combat veterans, most of them on swift boats. Some of them are eye witnesses to the event that The Hero received his Silver Star for.
According to The Hero, he pulled someone out of the water who fell off The Heroes' boat when they were ambushed by the enemy. The Hero braved a 'hail of machine gun fire' to save the crewmember.
According to the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth organization, a boat in their task force hit a mine which caused severe damage. Every boat (except The Hero's) fired blindly into the jungle to suppress the expected enemy reaction to the explosion, but nothing happened. During the firing, The Hero's boat ran off, and then returned to pull the man out of the water. There was no return fire.
The Left defends Kerry by saying that his Silver Star was given because he was recommend for it, and it was awarded by military orders. True, John Kerry was recommended for the award by...John Kerry. Not surprisingly, military awards and decorations are usually provided by...the military. The Book of the Month Club doesn't get involved.
