My Comments About the Cement Plant
We moved here from Houston almost five years ago now. We live in The Hills of Montgomery subdivision which comes together with the "back ends" of Grand Lake Estates and Crown Oaks. When we first moved in, it was so quiet and peaceful. But, as construction began in these other two subdivisions, we have had an influx of cement trucks and even more dump trucks on our roads practically every day. I think that your concern certainly should be the health of the children and those adults in the surrounding areas. Yes, the emissions from the plant are bad enough. But, as someone stated in your article, the trucks and the diesel emissions from these trucks should be of even greater concern. I would say that 90% of the cement truck drivers who come through our area are observant of the posted speed in our neighborhood. The other 10% of the dump trucks and cement trucks who come through are not... and it only takes one of these monsters to do major damage; either in the form of an accident or in the form of a pedestrian/vehicle accident, which chills me to the core. I have called the sheriff's department many times to complain, as have others in this neighborhood (I have seen one officer in 4 years). When some of the drivers see me outside with my notepad and phone, they slow down. Others fly by me with no regard whatsoever. Yes, I believe in free enterprise. Yes, I believe in small business because we happen to own one. But, I also believe in being a good citizen and a human being. I have children, although grown now, and have protected them with my life. I think that this could be a win/win situation if the owners of this company would consider moving a little further out of town and not so close to a school. I think the argument about tax revenues is a very selfish one. The school district here is most definitely getting plenty of revenues from homeowners and property owners---i.e..the new schools and new stadium. I hope the fight goes on and people stand their ground.....Our representatives are supposed to be on the side of "the people", not business over the citizenry. We, the people, will remember these things on election day. Thank you very much....
