EDITORIAL COMMENTARY
Wednesday, November 3, 2004
Thanks community, emergency services and Jim for your help.
Dear Editor:
Last week, October 12, 2004, my car hit a tree sideways on FM 149, near the intersection of FM 1791, when I lost control on a corner. It was apparently caused by a low or flat rightfront tire, judging by the fender damage and the tire itself. In just moments, members of the community, Ambulance Service, Sheriff, and LifeFlight Helicopter Service were on scene. I was
never introduced to any of these people, with the exception of one. I believe his name was "Jim," although I was in such pain I may be incorrect about that. I don't think he even said his last name, except that he mentioned he lived in the area.
I am so pleased that such a true spirit of community is still a part of what we Texans are! From the concern of "Jim," who held my hand, to those who handed me off to the helicopter crew, there were so many who took time that morning to help. There was even a bit of humorin the background I could hear a true "Verizon Moment." As far out as we were, with tall trees around, I overheard "Can you hear me now?" more than once. Priceless!
And now, something far less humorous, yet just as priceless. Parents, please clip this letter (if it's published) and hand it to your teenagers.
My son, who's finally past his "invincible" stage, used to tell me he'd gone through accidents without seatbelts, and didn't really see the need for them. Don't believe it! I'm here because of mine. The BMW's totaled. The tree's dead. But I'm not...and even the trauma doctors were impressed with the seatbelt marks. That's a lot of force.
