Politics & Politicians 1820-2000
The Conclusion
Starting November 20th on TV, a program
called History Channel will talk about
politics beginning with George Washington.
The Chronicle TV Critic Ann Hodges says
the program will reveal that those leading
founders of the Declaration of
Independence are not only heros, but also
traitors and troublemakers and the amount
of alcohol they drank was staggering.
Another quote proving that nothing has
changed in politic reads; "with his
rotten teeth and shaky health, George
Washington would never have passed Senate
Conformation". Today our candidate
Cheney will pass if elected. Another
quote; "John Hancock had an ego even
bigger than his very large bank
account." We sure have lots of this
kind among our politicians today. Another
quote; "Samuel Adams, whose wardrobe
was worn and rumpled, had failed at
everything he set out to do, was an
agitator, known for his essays to arouse
the people to establish a Continental
Congress and to cut taxes." Quote;
"When John Hancock needed a lawyer,
his friend, Samuel Adams recommended a
relative John Adams." The narrator
says John Adams, the lawyer is close to
being "manic-depressive, with highs
and lows all the time, but he is a good
lawyer." in our presidential election
of the year 2000, there are more lawyers
than there is time to count the votes, and
I’m sure the description of John Adams,
a lawyer in the time of the American
Revolution, can also be applied in several
present day cases. I’m also sure that
very, very few knew at the time that John
Adams had that mental problem and we in
America have benefitted in spite of it. I’m
also sure we, America will survive the
presidential election of 2000, whether we
know the inside-under-side of the
candidates and lawyers or not.
In the TV History Channel miniseries
"Foundering Father," it states
"Alexander Hamilton had the first sex
scandal." What’s new during the
political years from 1700's to the year
2000 in the use of that political tool?
It has reportedly been proven that
Thomas Jefferson, a man repeatedly quoted,
and offered as an example of great wisdom,
author of widely proclaimed books on many
subjects, acknowledged as one of the
greatest of Statesmen and last but not
least, the father of a racially mixed
family, that he did not own up to, benefit
or recognize. There is no doubt that most,
not all, but the majority of our
presidents have unclean hands or maybe
unclean hearts would be more aptly said.
There was the president that served in
the armed forces under great hardships
leaving behind rumors of an affair, which
must have caused his family great pain,
true or not. We also had a president who
seemed to have single-handedly brought
about the end of the terrible depression.
There were rumors swirling about the White
House for years about him and his office
force. He was never divorced and though
there was little secrecy in the news or
media reporting, there was never any
suggestion of impeachment.
We can move on to the presidential era
of "Camelot" when the reports of
the White House social activities
(extra-marital) seemed to take place
weekly and the media seemed to report
those actions in a
"boys-will-be-boys" manner.
Never once was there a question raised
during the course of all the above
administrations to the ethics and the
disgrace to America and/or impeachment.
Double standard and which political party
is guilty?
We Texans are so proud of being first
last and always Texan’s have had a
president who’s biography by perhaps a
half dozen or more authors openly tell of
the buying of votes, of the suppression of
voters and habitual philandering. The
effect of these tale-telling stories on
the family and friends left behind must be
terrible. All these "open"
secrets of the politicians and our
presidents over a two hundred year period
leaves me with one great unanswered
question. What happened suddenly, after
two hundred years, to find enough fault,
with a fault attributed to almost every
president in the past two hundred years,
to level impeachment proceedings at the
billions plus cost, against our last
sitting president? Double standards? What
party is guilty of double standards?
My old-timer relatives declared that
all their good times came under a
Democratic party rule, all the bad under a
Republican rule. If so, there’s nothing
new under the sun.
