SIU K-9 sniffs out 1.5 tons
|
MCSO Special Investigations Unit Deputy Tom Thompson and K-9 Bianca
3,000 lb. dope bust!
Story, photos by Jamie Nash / Video by Scott Engle
October 21, 2009
EAST MONTGOMERY COUNTY- A refrigerated 18-wheeler parked at the Flying J Truck Stop on US 59 at SH 242 Tuesday evening blended in, appearing to be a typical produce hauler. That is, except the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit K-9 Bianca.
As SIU Deputy Tom Thompson walked around the parking area with Bianca, she had a strong reaction to one of the trucks, according to SIU Deputy Buddy Kellum, giving a positive air sniff alert.
Kellum said running a check on the truck’s license plate revealed it was uninsured and the registration was expired.
“We waited for the driver to exit the restaurant,” he said. “We made contact with the driver and he gave consent to search the vehicle after we told him we had the K-9 alert.”
With the rear door of the trailer open, the truck still appeared to be filled with watermelons and lemons. Having partnered with Bianca for years and confident in her accuracy, Deputy Thompson climbed on top of the load and saw bundle after bundle of an illegal harvest.
Hidden amidst the melons and oranges was an estimated 3,000 lbs. of marijuana, wrapped and sealed in plastic, divided into various sizes.

Kellum said the load originated in the Mission / Edinburg area, which is in south Texas near the Mexican border. Drug trafficking is an ongoing problem on both US 59 and Interstate 45 through Montgomery County.
As of this writing, the driver was still being questioned and no name or other personal details were available.

What a waste of tax payer dollars. Such a shame that resources are squandered on things like this. How about our law enforcement personnel spend their time on serious offenses such as sex offenders, thieves, murderers. Excellent job unloading those watermelons.Go find a meth lab or crack house or something similar Also, doesn't Montgomery County have any type of physical fitness standards for deputies? Both of these public servants could stand to mix in a salad on occasion. WWJD

What??!! This is a good bust. It seems you're a little upset about this particular bust. Did you not get your shipment delivered?

Give me a break. I can get all of the watermelons I need at the local grocery. Put 'em on ice...good stuff. I cut and pasted this from a sheriffs deputy application on the Montgomery County web site.... " Must be able to take and pass a physical agility test and pre-employment written test" Both of these big boys can probably pass the written test? Not so sure about the supposed "physical agility test". They might be able to win the 5 yard dash to the local donut establishment!

A comment such as this one insulting officers physical appearance is wasted on two brave individuals who have and would sacrifice their lives to ensure the safety of our citizens on public streets. Well done, gentlemen. I appreciate the honor of your duty. At the least they are doing their job instead of stealing from citizens or banks, and molesting children.

"At the least they are doing their job instead of stealing from citizens or banks, and molesting children."
Actually, their job should be to stop people from doing those things you listed, not enforcing prohibition on weed. Obviously this isn't the fault of these particular fat cops but the system needs work.

Hasbro S Whacked
Intended use of irony is wasted on those with a lack of insight and accurately sums up your conclusion of this article and my comment with petty, childish, pointless, slippery slope protest. A driver out of MX has to make a living somehow; (human trafficking, child slave labor, prostitution, illegal weapons, money laundering.) Also a person's choice for a healthy lifestyle is still LEGALLY YOUR RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

Did you see the photos? You're entitled to your own opinion but I'm pretty sure it's a fact that these two cops are fat. I will agree that they are brave but only in that they can stand up to heart disease like that. It's more likely to kill them than the marijuana is.

I think you are missing the whole point! These two wonderful men just stopped all of those drugs from reaching whatever destination they were headed. For all we know, they could have been headed to the neighborhood closest to my son's school, or my daughter's school! I think that we should all praise these gentlemen, and Bianca too! I'm not sure if you have children or not, but I do, and I honestly don't want those drugs anywhere near them!

If you're worried about your kids doing drugs, you should probably be a responsible parent and talk to them. If your son and your daughter are going to do drugs whenever they are nearby, that sounds like a problem with your parenting. Besides, marijuana is already in the schools.

And, as far as the physical aspect of your comment, I think that you need to get a life instead of ridiculing the upstanding members of the police department. They put their lives on the line to keep us safe, and if you can't appreciate that then you need to go somewhere else that isn't nearly as fortunate to have a police department like ours, then maybe you will understand all that they do for us!!!! GREAT JOB GUYS! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!

Do you think the person who paid for the drugs is just going to say "well....that sucks" and everything will be ok? No...violence will increase from this as the supply chain is now more strained. And it's not the officers fault...it's the fault of all you ignorant people who don't understand basic economics and keep electing incompetent leaders. Legalize it, regulate it, and tax it. It's the best way to protect your children, not insignificant busts like this.

And all the drug lords will just say "Oh well, I guess we'll stop trafficking this stuff since it's legal now." Right? You don't think that there will be even MORE competition to distribute and traffic this stuff. You'll see an increase in drug lords trying to ship this out and an increase of violence as they try to take each other out.

I mean....that IS what happened after they ended prohibition of alcohol....oh wait...no, it isn't...If it's legalized and legal competition lowers prices, then there will be little, if any, demand for illegal drugs. The drug lords wont kill each other because their competition ISN'T other drug lords. DEMAND drives drug dealers to compete (violently), and prohibition does not lower demand - therefore prohibition does not lower violence.
